8ntruck 7,145 #1 Posted November 5, 2024 If all goes well this month, we are planning to get EJ the 8N out to our 20 acre woods. We need to make a decision to either move it back to my friend's warehouse or to come up with some sort of shelter for it out on our property. We expect to need that shelter for up to 2 years. One option for cover on the property is the Harbour Freight style steel frame/fabric cover type. I know that many of you have used one of these. How long did they take to assemble? Once in service, how long did they last? Thanks in advance.
ebinmaine 68,625 #2 Posted November 5, 2024 Buy one for the FRAME. Get a good strong heavy TARP. We've tried several between friends and family. The original covers that come in the inexpensive and midgrade (any residential) portable garages are good for ONE season. One. My experience shows me that ONLY the super HD commercial grade tarps are worth relying on. Big $$$$$$

Update on that thread: I give the frame to @Achto and him and another buddy and they order a replacement cover which lasted how long Dan?? I guess they gave him a discount on a better grade cover right Dan? 10 months on the standard cover. Shelter Logic was more than willing to replace the standard cover, new cover would not come with a warranty though. I choose to have them credit me the price of a standard cover and apply it to the cost of a cover that has a 10yr warranty. One year in with the better cover & all looks well so far. Don't know why they do not offer a new shed package with the 10yr cover or their next upgrade of the 15yr cover. Tips on a Shelter Logic "Fake Garage". 1- The standard cover will not last much over 10months if it is in direct sunlight. The south side of mine was breaking down quite badly while the North side was completely fine. 2- Moister can be an issue inside of these shelters. Absolute best cure for this it to cover the entire floor area with a tarp. This keeps the ground moister out completely. First hand experience with this is nothing but positive. I (keep) learning the hard way quit being a tightwad on some things. Thought I bought a cheap missus and look how that turned out. 1

C-85 698 #8 Posted November 5, 2024 We looked at Shelter Logic and then we went with Farm Tek. They both seem heavy duty, but this one had the clear roof, so we went with that. This one is pretty heavy duty and came with a 15 year warranty. We've managed to keep the snow off from it as much as we could and it is doing good, it is 7 years old now. The HD type EB spoke of right there. $$ but worth it if you want it to go awhile. That one is huge ... almost fit two deuce and a halfs in there.

8ntruck 7,145 #11 Posted December 3, 2024 I bought a HF 10'x17' portable garages on black Friday. We got it mostly set up yesterday - frame assembled, cover on. Got back to the property this morning to anchor it down. When I opened the door, I noticed that the inside was damp with condensation. That worries me a bit. I've set it up over dirt, so I expect that is where the moisture is coming from. Hindsight being 20-20, I probably should have put a tarp down first to act as a ground cloth. That would probably be less than ideal for driving the 8N tractor in and out, though. Those of you that are using one of these or a similar structure, are you doing anything to control condensation? Build a floor? Add vents?
Beap52 898 #12 Posted December 3, 2024 Our kids had a 24x30 metal carport installed. The non English speaking installers got it up in a couple of hours. I laid treated 2x6's down so they could set the bottom runners up on the boards keeping the runners off of the ground. They drove rods (I'm guessing 24" long) through the runners and 2x6 to hold the carport in place. I can't see how the rods the fellows used could hold the carport but it's been there three or four years. Fortunately, they are surrounded by trees and don't catch much wind. I had a 12x28 carport given to me as a basket case. I installed it over a cement slab and then made brackets attaching it to my shop. I priced carports on local marketplace sales and they didn't seem to expensive and Menards sells carports but free was hard to beat. I had to purchase extension legs for my carport to get the height needed for camper.

Be sure to buy removable vents if possible so when the cover & ends need replacement you can swap the vents. While you're there on-site always leave the end(s) open.

I have a 12x20 Shelter Logic brand. I had gable vents and they helped, but I still had condensation. The absolute best way to stop condensation is a vapor barrier on the floor. I put a tarp down to cover the entire floor and the condensation stopped. At first the tarp would move when I moved tractors around on it, but after a few months it hardly moves at all. Staking the out side edges of the tarp down well is a must. The only time I have the door open is when I'm moving tractors around.
