Not a restoration

Realy nothing wrong with the 1985  312-8 other then rusty metal and bad paint.  So I'm taking it apart to remove and treat the rust and give it a full paint job. 

Haven't started on the hood yet, not looking forward to removing those 39 year old decails. Still haven't got all the glue off the fender  I would leave them on but

they have turned up along the edges, and faided. I have used heat on the decails and gas on the glue. Has anyone found a better method

Exactly what i do... just add patience... 

Blow dryer really slow... gas for the glue...

I use a heat gun for decal removal, and have found that with just the right amount of heat the glue will come off with the decal. Not enough heat and the decal will tear and is heard to remove. Too much heat and it leaves the glue behind. 3M makes a great adhesive remover too!! 
I’ve also tried to just repaint a tractor and then I can’t help myself from taking it further apart and then it becomes a full blown restoration!!

Charcoal lighter fluid or naphtha  works well at removing glue.

 

3M gum wheels work well too.

bought this tool used with drill motor on a video for auto decal removals -- i've used it a few times and works pretty well -- don't have the box or recall where i ordered?

I was using charcoal lighter fluid. It's going to be a bixxh, I can't conplain as I got it free. Sure hated lossing Bill one of my best friends.

You can get a specialty pad that straps it and doesn't damage the metal or paint. Just put in in your battery powered drill and pulls it off.

What Bill said......get an eraser wheel for your power drill or die grinder.  Autoparts store or jungle site should fix you up.  My buddy who owns a body shop let me borrow one once upon a time and it blew my mind how easy it was to remove decals/adhesive.  In that specific case, I was removing original pinstripes and decals from a junkyard replacement door for a 1988 Subaru.  It took everything off in a matter or seconds and didn't damage the paint.  I've had one in the tool box ever since.

 

For big decals, I would probably still start with the heat gun to get the sticker off, but the eraser should chew right through the adhesive that is left

I'm still working on this 1985 312-8 . I had changed out the narrow rims and add all new tires. Fxed the hood hinges and built new tierods. Here a few pictures of prgress.

Washed twice trying to get some of the 39 years of dirt and grease off.

Found the case and all the seals were leaking, some one had had it apart.

Found another way to use the boom. Got it back on the wheels.

Started put it back together. Still need to get the sheet metal painted.

Have it mostly back together, all the large pieces of sheet metal painted. This was a free tractor but lost a best friend to cancer. He gave it to me because I wouldn't destroy it. 

Well so far four new tires and tie rods, up graded the wheels, added studs and lug nuts, fix a few things, painted it, new seat, new air filter. I'll nave about $450 in it by the time I'm finished.

What paint did you use? Alkyd (oil based) paint does not gas out (cure) for up to 30 days. Wait to put on your decals until the paint has cured. Acrylic urethanes can be decaled after 24 hours.

Used "Rust-oleum Professional" High Performance Enamel in spray cans.. "15 Minute Fast Dry" it is quick but it's been painted three weeks. The color is Safety Red, they do make it in Regal Red. but the Lowes here doesn't stock it.  It's a a 12 to 25 footer just according how good you eye site is.  Sat in a shed with the roof blown off for years had some bad rust in areas. I didn't do a lot of primer and block sanding so some areas still show where it was rusted. The main thing was to stop the rust.
