Fasteners aren't necessary if it isn't bad.The vinegar will still work. Best to do the fastener thing first when it's dry to get the bigger stuff and most of the rust off and out. Length of time for the soaking depends upon how bad it is. The beauty is there aren't any toxic chemicals to discard either. Use it for weed killer if you add a little salt to it. After the final rinse and dry I typically put a little gas mixed with 2 stoke oil. Shake around and get everything covered. The oil will help coat the metal, then just add gas to it whenever you're ready. dmoore 835 #29 Posted November 5 (edited) Vinegar didn't phase it. I went the Evapo Rust route. I had forgot about it. Used it years ago and had great results. What ever floats your boat, some like an off shade of white and others like a darker shade of white, like almond. I've even seen them painted black. wallfish 17,023 #34 Posted November 5 I've cleaned many things using household vinegar from pulleys to gas tanks and it's worked every single time. Maybe something was coating it. ? Yes, those foot rests are 1961. Not uncommon to see those or the diamond plate 1960 type on an RJ. They just didn't come from the factory that way. Rear toolbox and fenders were an option for them. I don't think spot welding two straps to that thin hood and securing the tank with full tank of fuel was exactly the best way but hey, I guess at the time it seemed ok. You would also need a new O ring for that shut off screw and a new gasket for the glass bowl. Maybe cut that piece you have for one. Use a fine mesh screen to filter the larger debris out.
