dmoore 952 #26 Posted November 5, 2024 I've got it full of concentrated 5% for overnight. I'll add some fasterners tommorow and give it a little shake. Thanks!

Thanks! Fasteners aren't necessary if it isn't bad.The vinegar will still work. Best to do the fastener thing first when it's dry to get the bigger stuff and most of the rust off and out. Length of time for the soaking depends upon how bad it is. The beauty is there aren't any toxic chemicals to discard either. Use it for weed killer if you add a little salt to it. After the final rinse and dry I typically put a little gas mixed with 2 stoke oil. Shake around and get everything covered. The oil will help coat the metal, then just add gas to it whenever you're ready. The little bit of oil in the gas won't hurt anything in the engine Edited November 5, 2024 by wallfish 1

Otherwise they’ll flash rust pretty easily!
dmoore 952 #29 Posted November 5, 2024 (edited) Vinegar didn't phase it. I went the Evapo Rust route. I had forgot about it. Used it years ago and had great results. As thin has that little tank is I didn't want to take a chance on puncturing it or making any pin holes. Edited November 5, 2024 by dmoore
dmoore 952 #30 Posted November 5, 2024 Got the seat down to bare metal(I love my Skat Blast cabinet!) So which shade of white is generally accepted for these RJ's? Wheels as well? Thanks!
dmoore 952 #31 Posted November 5, 2024 From what I am seeing/reading here these foot rest were not destined for 58/59 but rather 60/61? School me!

What ever floats your boat, some like an off shade of white and others like a darker shade of white, like almond. I've even seen them painted black. So it's whatever appeals to you.
wallfish 17,445 #34 Posted November 5, 2024 I've cleaned many things using household vinegar from pulleys to gas tanks and it's worked every single time. Maybe something was coating it. ? Yes, those foot rests are 1961. Not uncommon to see those or the diamond plate 1960 type on an RJ. They just didn't come from the factory that way. Rear toolbox and fenders were an option for them. dmoore 952 #35 Posted November 6, 2024 Good Info Fish! I knew those foot rest were 60/61. Common add on I'd imagine. Think I'll leave em on.
dmoore 952 #36 Posted November 9, 2024 Well the Evap O Rust lived up to its name. Tank is squeaky clean and ready to mount. I don't think spot welding two straps to that thin hood and securing the tank with full tank of fuel was exactly the best way but hey, I guess at the time it seemed ok. dmoore 952 #37 Posted November 9, 2024 Rear 6-12 tubes from Miller's should be here Tuesday. Wheels will be blasted along with seat by Sunday. Jake is shipping me a Schnacke recoil starter. Lowell is sending me two rear axle seals. Just about ready to start linseed oil process.

dmoore 952 #39 Posted November 9, 2024 Isn't there supposed to be a fine mesh screen in this fuel tank shutoff?
dmoore 952 #40 Posted November 9, 2024 There was a black neoprene gasket when I opened it up. I've seen round screens in these years ago. From what I have gathered, there was no Inline filter on these tractors?
dmoore 952 #41 Posted November 9, 2024 Also am I to guess this one is original to a 58/59 RJ?
wallfish 17,445 #42 Posted November 9, 2024 Yes, there should be a screen. You can get the whole assembly new https://isavetractors.com/glass-sediment-bowl-fuel-filter/
dmoore 952 #43 Posted November 9, 2024 Do you know if that screen is sold separately? I am really intent on keeping this guy as original as possible.

You would also need a new O ring for that shut off screw and a new gasket for the glass bowl. Maybe cut that piece you have for one. Use a fine mesh screen to filter the larger debris out. dmoore 952 #48 Posted November 11, 2024 Lift arm has more play than I'd like. Anyone have luck installing a bronze bushing there? The welded round stock to frame (foot rest) as almost no signs of wear. Guess it's harder than the lift arm.
dmoore 952 #49 Posted December 6, 2024 Seat and wheels restored. The rest of the tractor has been wiped down with boiled linseed oil.
c-series don 9,414 #50 Posted December 6, 2024 Looks like you could drill out the lift arm and put a bushing in there relatively easy. It’s looking good Dave!
