That's what @wallfish built our Wally Digger Backhoe onto.

Great workers.

The throttle blade is not there. It runs, drives, cuts grass. 400 cash 30 minutes from the house. Deck has some holes, no air filter, rear end oil is rusty, need a shifter boot x2 (for the 310-8) its really loud, seat is hammered, wiring hacked on, tank dirty, leaks oil from? what else?? Would like some help  with the identification numbers? Got a good pressure wash today too, looks much better.

I don't know how to read those ID labels but the Kohler K was only used a couple years before the change to an Onan Twin.

Yours should be an '85 or '86.

All the other things are just a matter of time and energy to repair.

Might be worth your while to peruse the New to The Herd thread.

Can you elaborate on this?

yes the throttle blade is not there. the shaft, linkage is there. i used the choke to hold the engine at lower rpm. drove it on/off trailer, and started after pressure washing for a few seconds. im also familiar with new to herd thread, but i will visit again. thanks. so now i have 310-8, 416-8, and 520-h. recommendations on noise from engine? no holes in muffler, just seems excessively loud compared to the rest of the herd and 310 has holes in muffler near the engine yet still not nearly as loud. considering building the engine for extra ponies? leaking oil from somewhere to be determined. will mostly be used as a cruiser/ puller but pulling cars, trucks, and trailers and around the property, nut the traditional pulling. towing would be a better word i guess. i was looking for a "camming" sound at idle but still useful and peppy. is this do-able with the k341?

It's a 1985 model 31-16K801 the Kohler engine model no check out as a K341S-71371. Can't give you a model no for the deck, but all later model 42" side discharge deck are for the most part the same.

According to the 1985 Wheel Horse Manual you have a 3 amp battery charging system and AC lights and near as I can tell from your pictures it doesn't have a Hour Meter.

The best thing about this model is a simple electrical system.

I barn found the exact model - after backing it in the garage and giving it a full going over it's my favorite tractor - K341 is a beast - been plowing blowing and mowing for 5 years with it now . Unlike the others I own or owned , can sit for 4 months and it fires right up - not even my newer 315-8 does . You'll be glad you brought it home

What kinda carb?

I may have a blade for it here.

It's possible someone attempted a rebuild and failed.

Carefully check the amount of play at the top of the throttle shaft in the carb body bore.

I've heard tell that a bad points adjustment can cause this.

@squonk or @wallfish ?

Not sure on the cam lump at idle.

I do know that your "idle" should be 1200 to 1300 RPM and getting a lump at that RPM would be a trick.

As to increasing torque... yes it can be done and the answer is the same as with a bigger engine.

How much money ya got??

You can have the cylinder head planed .040 or .050 to increase compression.

You can have a multi angle valve seat grind done to increase air flow.

You can do some port grinding in the runners to increase air flow.

And of course there's all the standards of what the competition pulling crowd does.

Midwest Super Cubs has a bunch of parts available.

Do NOT deal with a "B Miller" site. I'll not elaborate on that. It's been brought up before and I'd rather you arrived at your own conclusions there.

Bad points adjustment = timing off = engine laboring = loud

Is it up, down, or both directions?

Inside of the muffler the pipes with holes could be broken/rotted. Maybe swap the muffler from the 310 on to it to confirm if the muffler is the problem.

An 8hp would have enough power for towing those things because of the trans gearing so that 16 is more than enough already, unless you just want to experiment with it for gaining power. Probably cheaper and easier to drop an 18hp in it. It will loose traction way before losing power. Towing heavy loads on hills can be a problem because of the brakes and or traction so that's something to keep in mind.

Sound can be more easily changed by the muffler used. Low tone larger muffler will give that "throatie" deep sound whereas a pepper pot muffler will give that loud annoying tinging sound. A longer pipe and a small car muffler can make it quiet or just a longer open pipe with a flared end being larger, etc etc etc. :twocents-02cents:

Already some good pointers posted on things to check such as points etc, but that 16hp in perfect order is gonna be quite a bit louder than a 10hp. Just FYI…

I'll send a PM with my text contact and more info later today or sometime tomorrow. Busy weekend for me.

For now, I'll tell ya this.

You'll want to remove the carb(s) and check the BOTTOM bore to throttle shaft play.

I know I wrote top earlier in this thread but it's more important to carefully check the bottom before you send one here.

The reason is the the top is most often repairable with the spacer. The bottom is not repairable,  at least by me.
