Is that the Onan engine?  If so, might want to check the seam in the intake manifold.

For that price, you bought a nice deck and got a free tractor that looks pretty good. :handgestures-thumbup:

Picked this up two nights ago to push leaves and snow but more importantly to ride my grandson around on. My first Wheel Horse and when I saw it, I had to have it. Still trying to learn more about it but it is a 312-8 with the Kohler Magnum 12. I've attached the VIN plate (blurry). Can anyone tell me what year it is?

Welcome.  If it read 2112k801 it is 1985

but it would have been a K series not magnum...

Edit:\\

If it reads R112K801  it is 1990 and had the magnum engine

OK, thanks. I read the model # as 31112R801..but a second look makes me agree the R is actually a K?

Won this at auction.  They said it ran and mowed (yeah like I believe auction houses)  Went to pick it up. it would start but barely ran took several tries to keep her running enough to get on the trailer...not looking good but I was really interested more in the nice looking deck.  Got her home played around still ran like cr*p.  (I had to look up how to adjust B&S carb...all mine are Kohler Techy...)  still didn't want to run,  drained fuel tank replaced fuel filter she ran better not great but the longer she ran the better she got.  and some more carb adjustment now runs well.  have ordered carb kit.  Hydro seems strong haven't got really hot yet to test.  Deck look good and is quiet.  Heck the battery is only 4 months old...  Not sure what to do with her really didn't expect to win (with tax and fees 300) and have no real need...

Contact @Brockport Bill.  I know he's wanted one for awhile.  Maybe you two can meet up.  I love those Briggs.  Great engine.  Power on par with an Onan, with none of the problems.  By far the easiest twin to work on.  Basically an early 520 without the wiring nightmares.  If you decide not to sell it you'll probably end up loving it.

Ran her more today actually mowed some.  Got the hydro hot hooked it up to my truck and she tried to dig holes.    Carb is still finicky on hills (float issue?)  Thinking now she may be put on cyclovac duty.  Currently using C-175-8 but having better speed choices would speed up process...

Change all the fuel lines, tank valve and grommet.  Also change the vacuum line from engine to carb.  The carb can be cleaned and rebuilt on the engine without removing it.  If you do decide to remove it for rebuild it can be removed without taking the intake manifold off.  Be careful of the little springs in the fuel pump.  Plugs are Champion RJ12C.  Clean the engine find well and re torque the head bolts.   I'd be happy to help with any questions you have

Also that hydro should have the same gearing as the 520HC.  Faster ground speed when needed.

Excellent find Paul!

I've been a Briggs fan for years. Those 16/18 twins have a decent history.

I've seen things saying that and/or maybe a hair lower.

The Workhorse GT1800 we built definitely scoots right along.

Cool find!  I bet if you don’t like it, you can pawn it off on @Docwheelhorse for $399!

@Bill D You beat me to it, I spoke with @Brockport Bill a while ago and he told me that he was looking for a good GT-1848 and that one certainly fits the bill. That’s a 1982-83, you can tell by the older style hydraulic lift handle. @pfrederi for what you paid, you got a heck of a deal. It’s one of the nicest Work Horses I’ve seen in a while, considering it’s over 40 years old someone took good care of it. Most of you guys know that I’ve been a huge Work Horse fan since I bought my new in 1984, and it’s still going strong.

I'm curious about this, because my GT-1848 checks out as a 1982, but has a different lift handle. I'd need to go look but I think mine comes out of the tower, not the horizontal plate, and doesn't have a "cross piece".  Maybe it was swapped out at some point - mine has a Honda GX610 engine, who knows what else they did to it.

Edit - found this picture, a bit hard to see the handle but it's there:

This one you got, I think even if the engine was shot it's still worth at least what you paid for it. Deck, wheels & tires, tins, all looking better than mine when I got it. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Appears to be in real nice condition. It is a 1990 model and if you click on the link below it will take you to all the manuals, service bulletins etc. we have for it.

Paul, you NEED that, the Work Horse is the Feature Tractor for the 2025 Big Show.   You can head up the bid parade and tell Wild Bill the story behind it.   :ychain:

I noticed on your Briggs powered GT1848 there is an extra fan in the outside of the engine tins.  I'm guessing that engine has been swapped too?  You typically see those on Briggs from Craftsman tractors.  What year is that engine?  Just curious.  Beautiful machines.

@davem1111 are you sure the year is right?? My GT1848  with the bagger has that style of hydraulic handle, I think it is an 1984. It has the flat looking gray paint.

The GT1848 with the ag tires is a 1982 and has the hydraulic handle in the tunnel cover, the brighter silver paint, and no rubber hood latches. @pfrederi tractor doesn't have the rubber hood latches either.

Yep,you are correct on the engine swap. Came from an older Craftsman tractor. I don't remember the year of the engine. It does have a fan behind the screen,no leaves or grass collects on the screen I guess due to the fan?? Thanks for the compliment!!

Hmmm.... I checked the S/N when I got it several years ago, but guess I should check again. :eusa-think:

Edit:   Well, now I'm not sure how I checked - there is no S/N sticker on the fender. Maybe I was guessing. Mine does have rubber hood latches too. It did used to be gray or silver, hard to tell when only a few spots are showing through the orangey-red someone put on it.

Second Edit:  Duh, the sticker is on the right side tower, but I can't read the numbers/letters. Took a picture, going to play with brightness/contrast to see if I can make them readable.
