manahale 43 #1 Posted October 30 Hello, So I've got a leak at the brake shaft. Checked my fluid and it is a cream color. Water I suspect, right? I imagine this is a big job. Trannie must come off? How do I know if I have a 5053 or 5058? Is it stamped on the housing? Couldn't find it. Found 111198 and 111203 stamped on the brake side. No time to do it this year. So, I'm wondering about draining the fluid and replacing it with ATF for the remainder of the year to clean it out. In the spring, I could take the trannie off and replace the seal and bearing if needed. Is that a good idea for now? Should I think about replacing everything when I have it apart? Or does it all come apart fairly simply where I could just fix what is broken and not worry about the rest until their time comes? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Drain fuild raising front end If it isn't reall ugly just refill Good advice. DO use a clean drain pan - after you drain it, let the fluid in the pan settle and look for anything out of the ordinary. Heavy metal shavings, broken gear teeth, or loose bearing needles ALL point to the need to drop the Unidrive and open it up. Contaminated fluid & water mix with none of the other issues, drain it, flush it with diesel fuel. Drain it & change the seal. DO look at the other 3 seals as diesel will migrate out easier. If they leak, fix them too. Install a new shifter boot & refill with fresh oil. (312-12??? - did you mean 312-8??) 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

kpinnc 12,358 #6 Posted November 5 Couple more recommendations: use some fine grit sandpaper to clean up the brake shaft before removing the old seal, and tape over the keyway with something thin like packing tape before installing the new one.
