Mule Drive - Vintage or Modified?

Recommended Posts

Picked up this Mule Drive that has a steel adjusting knob.  Is it an older design, or just someone's handywork?

My guess is someone's handiwork.  It is, after all, just a fancy nut that anyone with a lathe could make.  I think the factory would have knurled it, but I could be wrong.:confusion-shrug:

The adjustment knob is home made. The pulleys are the solid steel ones with pressed in bearings which is GREAT!  K&B Horse Parts makes a reproduction of that mule & it's expensive.

The stock mules have riveted stamped pulleys, not as heavy duty. Nice score! :handgestures-thumbupright:

Well.. when you loose them in the fall grass, only to "find" them cutting the grass in the spring...:o

@Bar Nuthin  good opportunity to CLEAN OUT AND RE PACK RELATED BEARINGS , wide rubber side shields  , remove easily , lucas 550 drop point hd green chassis grease , all  10 of the original bearings , known for whyining  noise . except pto cone sealed outed and inner needle . really makes a deck quiet , and spin up very easily . pete

@Bar Nuthin regularly see pto drive set ups that barely function , typically the pto down drive belt to deck , attachment , is a rusty wreck , WONDER WHY PTO LEVER  ENGAGEMENTS ARE A  SQUEALING / SHUDDERING ENGAGEMENT ?  its not one part, its EVERY related moving  connection . clutch wiped out ? cracked / down to rivets ?  thats showing you the way of cause and cure . refer to this area often , because its not a one spot fix , also  did my pto lever start point , next to battery , that functional detailing , is what  totally improves , many actions on these horses , just my own experience , ever try pushing a cable ?  what could you possibly do , to correct that ?  pete
