Real Horse 0 #1 Posted October 25 Hello, Can anyone explain or help direct me to the wiring diagram to put the solanoid back on our mower, 1998 516-H. We took the Solanoid off the Onan motor to have it tested thinking it was the reason the mower would not start. Its good but we did not get back to the job quickly and cant figure out what posts the wires go to reinstall it. especially the thick black and thick orange wire with the black spark-plug like end, and the blue-ended wires. 1 has the fuse, the other blue ended wire has an obvious end that goes to the brass clip on the top of the solanoid. I searched the site & saw several diagrams but they did not help and were not specific to our model. btw a new solanoid from Onan is $245 + shipping. Thanks to anyone that can help. and thanks for this site. A Real Horse Lover Gwen
WHX?? 48,815 #2 Posted October 25 The solenoid in the red circle is not supposed to be there. Must be a PO added thing. Same with the spark plug boot and wire. Power from the battery should go directly to the large right hand stud and the wire in yellow should go directly to the small post on the solenoid. There is no wire on the large left hand stud just a nut. That stud feeds the starter motor.
cleat 5,952 #3 Posted October 25 Solenoid in fact is there on the earlier models. Later models moved the relays up under the battery. Connect the orange wire to the same lug as the thick black battery cable. The wire with the fuse is the charge wire and also connects to the battery cable The blue wire from the start solenoid connects to a little lug on the Onan starter solenoid. 1
Real Horse 0 #4 Posted October 25 there is 1 more thin black wire (B9) that comes down in the same harness as the lights and black wire containing the fuse. does that go to the same onan post as the battery? if so there are no wires to the other post on the onan solanoid. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,041 #5 Posted October 25 The other wire on the solenoid is already there - short and goes into the starter housing.
Real Horse 0 #6 Posted October 27 We wired the solanoid up as explained above ( orange wire, thick black, & fused wire to the same lug) blue wire to the little lug, nothing on the other solanoid lug) but when we hook up the battery the solanoid runs/spins without power from the key, bypassing the ignition. any ideas? thanks for input thus far. cleat 5,952 #7 Posted October 27 This drawing might help. If you have it all hooked up correctly then maybe a solenoid is sticking closed. Solenoid wiring.pdf
