Keaton 437 #1 Posted October 23 I almost got my springfeild good enough for now and I wanted to change the exhaust and I wanted to see if it would come lose, the muffler came right off it was not doing much muffleing but then I tried taking it out of the block and it started comming out and it came out then I realized, it tool the threads with it, so the exhaust port threads are stripped and someone had a bolt on muffler on at one time and those bolts are busted off sticking out about 1/4 inch, don't know what to do, do you think there is enough metal to tap it 1 in its 3/4 right now, I could tap it 1 inch pipe thread, they make a such thing as pipe thread taps. any ideas would be great, thanks. and I know horses don't have Briggs but I posted here because all of you have worked on a small engine one time or another, and I know some people will buy other brands besides horses, thanks again Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
ri702bill 8,387 #2 Posted October 23 Some folks, myself included, have removed broken exposed bolts by welding a hexnut to the end of the bolt. the heat from welding helps to break it free. Pipe taps are tapered - you only need to go 2 more threads to get the rest useable. If it already is 3/4 NPT, you most likely do not have enough material in the block to go to 1".... 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Keaton 437 #3 Posted October 23 @ri702bill I went out there and dug through the bucket of various pipe and fittings and found a piece of 3/4 pipe and it threaded In a few threads, and it has no, left-right or up-down play, last night I got that out then through I stripped it then went inside because it was getting late, to I took a 3/4 pice out then took it down to 1/2 to im less likely to burn myself or is going down a 1/4 inch in exhaust size a bad idea? 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
