Wheel horse 856

Hello !

Some of you might remember I inquired about 856 during I wanted the big block short frame 1277. 

I picked it up on Sunday - 200 CAD. 

I will be my project hobby for next spring. And it runs though!

Nice - looks to be very complete - even the 2-spoke steering wheel is not bent and distorted (they usually are).

Be SURE that the rear hinged seat pan latch is working properly... others can attest to not having it latched correctly and getting pitched off the Horse backwards when you let out the clutch...

@Phan Nice 856 with a little time and a good cleaning this will be a great tractor. I put a E/Pump on this one not a fan of vacuum pumps. Just my

I have a very similar original 856 too . As far as a big block (10hp-16hp ) short frame tractors, they were only produced in 65 . I have a 1055 and a 1075 big block short frames along with a 1276 . The 1276 is definitely on a long frame .

My second Wheel Horse was an 856. I sold it in a package deal with a B-100 in 2011. I regret it to this day. The 856 was just one fine little tractor.

Nice tractor! I have an 856 that I use for snow plowing. With wheel weights and chains you wouldn’t believe how it pushes snow. The short wheel base and tight turning radius makes it perfect for a driveway. Enjoy!!

I have a 1055 (same tractor only a year older and a 10 HP Kohler) and it will get the job done.

My 856 is one of my favorites. It sat in the woods for a very long time. I only bought it because I didn't want to leave it. I never intended to get it running. Thought it would look better in my yard then in the woods. So it sat in my yard for a year. Out of curiosity I wondered if it would run again. It didn't take much to get the engine running again. Here is before and after. Named it " Forsaken "

Agreed with that Bob. They do not take up much room in the garage..I had a B100 a few years ago as a project that was a nice to owned. That went down the road also. Miss it also.

I'd love to get a second 60s short frame with an 8 or 10 HP. Such great machines.

 

I'd prefer an 10HP hydro so I can put the blower on it and leave it that way, in case we ever get snow again.

I had a regular key switch that I salvaged from a different tractor.  I used it along with a solenoid. You can see the solenoid mounted on side of dash tower. The headlights have a separate on/off switch that runs directly from the battery.

Actually I saved 2 that day. The other one was a 500 Special.

@D_Mac There is 500 near me if you would like it for parts.It is cheap. It is on C-list in Ma. Those turned out well. I hope you enjoy them. I am working a Commando 8 now all most done. Look back a few pages in late September if you like and find from this to that I believe is the title. Enjoy your weekend.

@adsm08 You live in W/Horse Meca!  You should easley find one what you are looking for and they are cheaper in you area because of there are so many W/Horse tractors there from I have seen and heard. Enjoy your projects.

There are lots of WHs around me, but the ones for sale are mostly from the late 70s and on. When the ones I am looking for come up they are either in need of a lot, or more than I have to spend.

Thanks but I sold that 500 shortly after I finished it. Pull start Techy engine , not my cup of tea. My 1075 has been up for sale. It needs a fuel pump rebuild or replacement. @adsm08 willing to take a road trip ?

If the price and time were right I could. That's about a 9 hour round trip, about 600 miles.

Well its my favorite but I hardly ever use it anymore. By " use it " I mean drive it around the neighborhood. Love to find a new home for it.

:either in need of a lot, or more than I have to spend:                   I think it is just part of this hobby going thru them and sending them down the road. I did one last year and I am buying it back today for some parts I need. I did three this year also it just keeps you busy if you have time on you hands..

I work 50-60 hours a week, have two kids and three dogs, and one of the kids and two of the dogs just started hunting this year.

Very much so. My wife and I are among a very few people who have managed to be better off financially now than we were in 2019, relative to inflation.
