O2B__ 7 #1 Posted October 20 While mowing along fine, engine suddenly died and no spark. I thought to replace points and condenser, but I don't even see a points cover. 953 nut 55,197 #2 Posted October 20 Yes, your engine came equipped with ignition points. Sudden failure probably isn't the points. Before you go out and buy parts you may not need I would suggest you do a bit of trouble shooting first. With the PTO off, transmission in neutral, and parking brake applied, Turn the ignition switch to the run position and check the voltage at the ignition coil terminal that has a wire coming back to the ignition switch. You should read 12 +/- volts there. Now move the meter to the terminal that has the condenser on it and see what voltage reading you see while holding the key in start, should be a pulsating 12 volts. The ignition points are under a cover at the other end of the wire from the condenser side of the ignition coil. 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

O2B__ 7 #6 Posted October 22 OK, so I had a little over 12 volts at the coil + terminal, and pulsating voltage at the - terminal when cranking. Tried again - no spark. Took out the spark plug lead from the coil and saw that there was some oil on the connector and the connector had some blackening. Wiped off the oil, wire brushed the connector and now a strong spark. So I'm wondering if the oil on the spark plug lead and in the coil socket is coming from a failing coil? 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
