JCD 59 #1 Posted October 16 Ok I don't do much wrenching and am about lost when it comes to working on mechanical things, My starter went out I had been having issues with it not working until I moved the wire connected to the starter and the whole thing would twist but I could get it to start. Now I'm getting nothing, no click no turnover absolutely nothing so I ordered a replacement Amazon.com: Caltric Starter Compatible with Toro 310-8 312-8 312-H Garden Tractor Kohler 1988 1989 1990-1996 : Automotive but I'm a bit confused should black plastic piece come off? I've tried pulling, prying, and twisting but it seems like it's permanently attached. I'll probably get the oem rebuilt but would like to get the tractor running in the meantime. Avoid scratching or scoring the metal shaft the plastic sleeve is protecting, of course! Note that the gear will be sliding on that shaft once the starter is installed. MUST go onto a clean oil & grease free shaft - if it is oily, it makes a caked mud mess... 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
JCD 59 #6 Posted October 16 hmm, didn't have dry lube so I used white lithium grease but only a small amount and when I read Bill's post I went and wiped off all excess so I hope it doesn't cause a problem. I do have another question, the plate that sits underneath the starter I began to remove the bolt that faces upward and sheared it off, when I did the entire plate fell, I see the two holes that look like they bolt to the engine but mine was unattached no bolts so it was only held on by that one bolt I sheared offf. Do I even need that plate under the starter or will the two long bolts that go through the starter keep it in place? Thanks, Jim Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
