hello all,

the seat mount cracked on my SIL's 414-8.  no surprise they all do eventually.  welded and ground the cracks.  then fabbed some brackets which go on top of the seat mounts.  should never have a problem again.20241015_090309.jpg.2dbbdd8f45a179f5e79a77286baf9f01.jpg

sadly, there is this hoodstand design shortcoming in these horses -- i have used large washers for reinforcement for those with minor emerging cracks - others have been welded if repairable --- and others I went the full fix by installing fabricated overlay brackets -- i actually had the brackets produced ( thanks to copies from Bill D. ) by a local fabricator/welder shop and he put the design specs/images on his computer software so in future i can just have new added units made by him. Took them home then painted and installed - - have some temporary screws in for alignment - but will work well after tunnel plate is installed.

@mrc  nice finish on that ! https://www.google.com/search?q=anti+vibration+pads&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS866US866&oq=anti+vibration+pads&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyDAgAEEUYORixAxiABDIHCAEQABiABDIHCAIQABiABDIHCAMQABiABDIHCAQQABiABDIHCAUQABiABDIHCAYQABiABDIHCAcQABiABDIHCAgQABiABDIHCAkQABiABNIBCDkxNTRqMGo0qAIAsAIB&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8  have these on my seats slightly added height , and eliminated , that seat strain , cracking area . when setting up my seats for a gain / improvement , looking at it from the side  to see what I could change / add , thats what gave me ideas and trial / error  experiment . regularly look at a trouble spot , to look at INTENDED FUNCTION , then improve things to make it better , pete

@Brockport Bill   numerous  changes / improvements , once done , made similar  mods to the others . really opened up leg to wheel issue , thats one spot , just switched locations , added back end spring support , all seats fit  INSIDE OF THE  FENDER  END EDGE .  that was another  common / complaint that I  encountered . done many mods , basically improving original set up , to my liking , cant even see it . pete

hi brockport bill,

i used angle iron because it is what i had on hand.  plus i do not have a sheetmetal brake.   how much per pair from your fab guy?  does he have some for the hydo's as well?  i think they may be a tad different.

thank you

mike

Hi Mike -- the units i used on the 416-8 are same as those i used on 314h - there are some subtle differences for the wh design of the tunnel/hoodstand ( cut outs - slots )  -- however, the set in photos on the 416-8 are modeled after the set on the 314h - I do not recall exact $$ price i paid but the first set in these circumstances  always cost more because it included his set up of the graphic images on his computer software -  I have not asked him a cost to reproduce because I ordered 2 sets for his first production and have not needed additional. If you are considering buying some i will ask him his fee to produce?

I've made several sets using 2" x 1 1/2" angle steel.  1/8" thick.  Made mine from old bedframe steel.

Bed frames are usually much stronger steel than what you will find at the local hardware store.

@mrc  ,@ lynnmor @Bill D  @Brockport Bill , major reason for failure is  the very end of a bracket  , that seat set up is always fighting against a seat ride / mount point , also heavy rider , constantly  moving around , learned long ago to over build . any possible metal flex railure point . also like channel steel , for bombproof , upgrades . those seat frame end bolt on compression springs , also help , just look up BOLT ON COMPRESSION SPRINGS  , inside hold curl is made for bolt hold . rarely ever revert back to the same  failure , with the same set up , the springs absorb stress cracking issue , easily worth a test run , paint it red or black  and you can't see it   , pete

The other place that usually needs repair on 300 and 400 series is the upper steering support.  The bushing get loose from using the steering wheel when getting on or off.

I used a Toro 6472 flange bearing, some have used flanged  ball bearing.
