Need help identifying and what’s missing

Recommended Posts

Picked up my first Suburban recently.
I think this is a 551 but don’t really know.
There appears to be a place for a battery.
Which means electric start which I wasn’t expecting. I know the engine is wrong (k-91)

The PO tried to put a bigger engine in it.
Numbnuts.

AlSo I think the steering column collar has been cut from the tower and will have to be welded back in place. Yes No?

Is the tower missing a support. Should it have two supports like the Rj’s?

There are no I’d tags on it anywhere.

If it is a 551 it will have a two piece transmission, three piece if its a 401.

Does 2 piece transmission refer to the Trans case like in the photo or does it refer to something internal

Great thx 953Nut.
So next problem- what should the tower look like?  Any one have photos of a 551 tower?

Yup, it's a 551.

Most of the original hood stand is there. On the right side the flat bar steel would come down to a square where the battery would fit.

You can see some 551 pics here in the photo gallery

The cast foot rest and the round hole in the hood are correct for 1961.

The 1961 401 had a k91 pull start and the 551 had a Tecumseh H?55 electric start.

I can't tell if the front rims are correct for the 59-61 tractors.  These rims are getting harder to find.

With them and the tires looking and the rest of the tractor looking untouched I would suspect they may be a newer style rim.

its obvious the steering shaft hole in the hood has been cut.

So I’ve got a 196? Suburban 551

I’ll get working on the Tecumseh.

it looks like I need to build the battery box out of flatbar. Still not sure how the steering column attaches to the hood support tower.

Yours is a 1961 suburban 551.
I have an installed battery box hood support. I’ll get pictures if I can get to it in storage.
PS.  The Tecumseh HH 60 is identical on the outside except for the small model number stamped on the tin.

Yeah sadly to some folks this is just a piece of junk to cut up and scrap.

And I quote " Forgive them father for they know not what they do"

Good luck with it.

Papal disposition would be required for such an egregious act.            Or would that be PayPal?            :scared-eek:

Nothing wrong putting a K90 or K91 on a 551 instead of a temper mental Tecky! You have to move the Rt. side frame member forward about an inch to clear the gov. shaft. Other than that no mods needed.
