Scot 1966 7 #1 Posted October 13 Hello everyone. i have been working on a 1980 C-145 hydro, with a sunstrand that I bought as a project. It now runs well, but I am having a problem with the drive belt. The belt that was on it was missing several pieces, so I bought a new one From researching on this site, and measuring the old belt, I bought a 7478 belt, which measures 5/8” X 84”. The belt is so short it won’t fit the 2 pulleys even without going under the tensioner pulley. I tried an 5/8” X 85” and it seems too long, as the tensioner pushes it down so far, it almost touches the other side of the belt. Also, it flies off as soon as you engage the tensioner. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I’m missing ? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

953 nut 55,734 #4 Posted October 13 The 7478 is a good part number for your C-145 and should work. One or both of those belts could be labeled incorrectly. I have used Tractor Supply Kevlar 5/8 X 82" belts on hydros with good results. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Scot 1966 7 #6 Posted October 14 I took the belt off, and it measures 84”, however, it is thicker than 5/8”. It measures .700” across the flat, which is .075” over 5/8”. I’m wondering if my problem is because the belt is wider, the width is preventing it from properly seating in the pulleys? The brand of this belt is D&D power sports, and came from Amazon. The top picture is with me pulling it down as far as I can, and the tensioner is all the way up, so you can see that there is no way the tensioner pulley will fit on top of it. peter lena 8,716 #9 Posted October 15 @Scot 1966 would also detail in that idler pulley set up , pulley move smooth / easy quiet ? also related spring tension linkage ? have seen more often than not , related connections with numerius rusty hang up points , KNOCK R LOOSE PENETRANT , pretty serious on rust , then aerosol red grease , extension tube , verify function . BTW every related wide rubber side shield bearing , like on that idler pulley , has been cleaned out and RE GREASED with lucas green chassis grease , movement ease is amazing , hi temp / stress , polyurea rated , imagine no bearing whine / noise , pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Scot 1966 7 #10 Posted October 15 The slot was worn in the tensioner arm. I welded the oval section, and machined it. It moves freely now, and the pulley turns with ease. My first issue is the 84” belt seems too short, and will not fit under the tensioner pulley. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
BBQVultureWings 111 #11 Posted October 20 I found a C-145 for $200 with a snowblade & mowing deck so I am going to get it tomorrow. Did the repair to the tensioner arm fix your problem? Curious as I am about to embark on a new project. I have a 257-H I am also working on. Just put new tires on the rims today. Gonna put a new drive belt on to see how it does. the 257-H has a snowblower attachment so 1 way or another I am moving snow with ease this year.... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I just spent the past hour cleaning All the electrical connections (Battery terminals, Ground connection, starter & Solenoid connections, Bothe ends of the plug wire, the high side of the coil where the plug wire goes in, points & Everything else....) before I even attempt to start it for my first time with this machine. I prefer to get every single thing clean & ready so I don't have to guess later. It most likely needs points as they were baddly corroded but I have gotten lucky before with just cleaning them. I cleaned them with some 220 sand paper & set the gap. Gonna check & lubricate where possible, all my pulleys & everything before I install the belt.It might be a couple days as Wheel Horse fun time is a luxury with all the other stuff needing attention around here. Thank you to everyone who offed suggestions! BBQVW… I was right where you are not long ago. Cleaning all connections, and filing points!
