Mark just take your time with it. Look everything over. If you need help ask us. Lots of manuals to look at.  Enjoy the ride when it is done.

Well not to happy right now.

Put a temp battery in it got it running.

Goes forward but won't make it up the ditch and only a slight reverse.

My fault trusted the guy he only showed me a video of it going forward and when I went to pick it up he said the battery took a dump. Anyway for 400 bucks I'm still ok .

It's running good but the hydro is slipping won't do hardly anything reverse and forward won't make it up a slight incline.

Don't give up hope. @squonk has found that using 10 W 40 motor oil can help a Sundstrand come back to life. That and a new WIX 51410 filter (or NAPA 1410) may make a big difference.

The attached manual will give you some other considerations including acceleration springs to consider.

First simple stuff...Hydro filled with fluid?? (Red is ATF Tan Motor oil 10w-30/40)  Do not mix them

Make sure drive pulley on pump isn't slipping

Richard types faster than I do.  Look at trouble shooting in the manual he linked

Is tow valve closed ??

Maybe it has something to do with tow valve.

Yesterday when loading the guy said it won't freewheel so I put it into freewheel probably for very first time ever I wonder if it could be something there.

Try working the tow valve ...you can turn it around and around it is a port type valve...may fix it self if not you can pull it but access is a PITA

Does  the midmount lift go up and down???

The tow valve was still in freewheel position.

Since you have the head off, now is a good time to pull carb and clean, then pull breather clean and adjust valve clearance.
