1960 Wheel Horse Suburban

Recommended Posts

ShawnsRJ

Hello and thanks for adding me to your group. I was wounding how many different years of parts are on my Suburban obviously it’s not original. I’ve been trying to contact a fellow on the web named VINSRJ since I use to own a few back in the 90s but we’re lost in a fire. I am getting back into them and was wondering when is the big wheel horse show in south mountain.

Thanks Shawn

The frame and trans is 1960. The 1960 400 and 550 are the same tractor except for the engines and electric start stuff

Kohler K91 is correct but probably a replacement engine

The foot rests are 1960

Looks like the gas was changed and probably not an original tank. The cap is sitting up too high

The front wheels have been changed. Looks like new tires on wheelbarrow rims.

The bracket on the front is for a dozer blade.

The big show in PA is always the weekend after Father's Day at the end of June

There will be a cast code on the trans next to the shifter. If it ends with 0 it's 1960 trans.

Your tractor is most likely a 400. Too bad someone cut the hood off but it still makes for a good tractor. Fun to drive and especially at engine shows

10/26/1959  They skipped the letter I because it could be interpreted as a 1. That casting is from late in 1959. Most likely it was an early 400 tractor.

The side plates for the suburban are different than the RJ, whereas the brake band tab would be different. On a 45 deg angle for the suburban. Vertical straight up and down tab on the RJ. Of coarse it's always possible parts are changed over the years but...who knows. I can see the 45 tab on your trans.

Think I found the back of your hood LOL It's a 400 cut off in just about that exact same spot

He's on bookface I believe. Or, Note him on his youtube channel maybe?  I see Vin at the local get togethers and engine shows all the time but he doesn't frequent here much anymore.

Think he's on Wheel Horse Junkies (or something like that). Search FB for the wheel Horse sites.

Well I looked all over fb with no success finding Vinsrj. So I’ll ask you  guys one of the questions I was going to ask him. I found a RJ35 the major problem with it is someone cut the frame and shorten it the C- channel that is why on earth they did this I’m not sure. I was thinking about buying it and welding a piece back in to put it back to factory length so a hood can be put back on. Has anyone seen this happen before? And if I was to repair it what is the factory length of a RJ35 C-channel frame ?

Thanks

He might be able to help you out . @Pullstart What’s your early RJ ?

How about some pictures of what we're talking about? Curious about that cut frame on the early RJ too as that's a weird mod and unnecessary work to do.

I have not purchased the RJ with the cut frame.I’m a little Leary with buying something that going to cost a ton to rebuild. That’s why I’m asking for the length of a rj35 frame because steel is not cheep and if it’s going to be a lot of money I’ll just buy the one Jake Kuhn has for sale. Which I’m leaning towards.

If it’s a 35 and if you can get it, you probably should!  I have one hanging out in the shop, measuring would be fairly easy.
