D_Mac 8,593 #1 Posted October 4 So I got this dropped off at my house last night. Has new tires, new blades, new spindles, new deck belt. The engine was swapped out from the original Briggs to this 25hp Kohler. Runs, drives and cuts just fine . The issue with it is that an over sized battery was shoved in there and the throttle and choke cables are messed up behind the dash. The throttle still functions if you mess with it a little but the choke dosnt. I'd like to find a little longer cables as they seem a little tight with this bigger engine. I think they route a little different as well. Not sure how to look for them. T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #5 Posted October 5 The John Deere L series came out over 20 years ago. They are made in the John Deere plant in Greenville, Tennessee. This same plant built the Sabre and Scotts tractors that were also John Deere's. The earlier Scotts were made by Murray, but the later ones were made by JD in Greenville. The L series were a deviant of the STX and LT lines that Deere made in the 1990s. They were entry level to compete against the MTDs, Sears, Murrays, etc. Most of them used the Briggs engines instead of Deere's premier L&G tractors which used either Kawasaki or Yanmar engines. Frames and decks weren't as heavy built as the X-series. They were designed as most of the entry level mowers to be 5 year mowers. Of course, with the proper maintenance they will last 20-30 years or more. But most customers bought them to have a John Deere and I see so many of them parked outside in the elements and having to mow foot long, overdue grass. D_Mac 8,593 #6 Posted October 5 (edited) Well worked on it this morning and got it all fixed. Addressed the cable issue. Turns out when they put an oversized battery in there, it jammed up the cable levers behind the dash. Put a charge on a smaller battery I had and installed it. It fired right up. Then I noticed when I raised the deck all the way up, it was higher on the left then the right hand side. It was installed uneven so I dropped it and leveled it out.
