1965 K321 71046 8HP No spark

Recommended Posts

Dear Friends,

Someone is selling his WH 8hp with no spark of 300 CAD. Could anyone please give me advise on whether I should take the risk - how serious the issues could be. I am not a mechanic guy, knowing a little about engines but am a fan of WH.

Thanks.

Well, for starters Phan, a K321 is NOT 8 HP - that would be a K181.The K321 is a large block engine, the K181 is a small series.

Not having any spark on most Kohler engines is an easy inexpensive fix. Doesn't matter what horse power it is, ignition wise most Kohler engines from 1965 had the same ignition system.

Buy it, post some pictures of the engine and we will help you trouble shoot it.

With old Kohler engines, I have a simple rule:

If it has compression when turned over by hand, it will run. The rest is fixable.

If it's a big block, it could easily have the breaker less ignition that would have to be converted to points.

WHX??

That ain't the worst price but yes we would need  to see pics. We could tell you exactly what you are getting into then.

If a Kohler, spins & has compression we can make it run. A  '65 might make it a SG motor if original.

What is a 71046??

Pesonally 140 CAN is my top dollar I can't hear it run but that goes with a grain of salt.

Big block in a short frame?!?!?!? :banana-wrench:

71046 should be the spec number for a 16hp K341

Dear Friends,

I appreciate all of your advice !

I spoke with the guy - he said he is not sure whether if the motor is 8hp or 16hp. He said it has a lot of compression, no knocking engine. He's owned since 2009, but it quited on 2015.

I attached the link (Links to classifieds hosted elsewhere are not permitted)

It includes mower deck 42".

What do you think? If things are good, I want to get it on Monday.

Another person is selling his, which is simlillar

However, I ahve a hard time to reach him.

Thanks!!!

You seem correct as the seller said he is not sure if 16hp or 8hp.

By the number of head bolts it's not a 16 and it ain't an 8 either. Looks like a replacement engine. I'm thinking a 10 or 12

Well, it isn't a 1965 and it isn't an eight HP nor is it a 16 HP engine. It is a fourteen horsepower K-321 replacement engine. The only thing I see that is missing is the belt guard, you will want to get that if the seller has it. The gears will grind while shifting without it.

71046 is the Kohler serial number.

The data decal is K-321 with a 6020 spec number making it a replacement engine.

Big block is 10hp or larger. Short frame refers to the shorter framed tractors of the 60s. We like those. Most common no spark issues are bad points, bad coil, bad plug wire or other wires. Like ground wire or wire from points to coil. Also could be a bad switch. No spark on these engines usually isn't hard to fix as it dosnt require taking the engine apart because every thing is external and easily accessible. The asking price I think is a little much. They all say ran good when it was parked X number of years ago. How's the tranny? Hows the tires? Steering tight? All things to consider. That being said..... Big Block on Short Frame ( making gorilla noise and grunts)

Be careful Phan ... links to off site sales are not allowed. The moderators and myself do not want to turn RS into a free for all selling site is the reason.  Since your post will most likely get edited. I cut and pasted the pics here which is allowed.

The short framed early sixties tractors  D Mac mentioned. Some were fitted with a 10 hp big block when traditionally they had small block 6,7 or 8 hp.

The 1045 and 1055 come to mind. In late '66 - 67 longer framed models with bigger motors became the norm as people wanted the more powerful motors with larger decks.  A positive and desirable model with us collectors.

If you decide to buy get us a pic of the tag visible just under the dash.

I'm guessing a 67 or mid 68 model.

Three speed and hood decal say repoed 10 or 1257
