what is this and where does it belong on my 312-8

Hey Guys, I mowed the lawn yesterday and when I went out this morning I found the two larger pieces on the ground between my right front tire (from the seat) and the mower deck.

I checked around and didn't see where they may have come from so I popped the hood and found the two smaller pieces on the ledge at the bottom of the hood.

I don't see anywhere they may have come from, does anyone recognize what it was, where it goes and where I might find a replacement.

PTO clutch disk (or what is left of it).

 

You need to pull the PTO bell off and you will likely find where these parts came from.

Thanks, guys I'm not sure if it's an easy fix for someone as mechanically inexperienced as myself but I watched a youtube video and I'll give it a shot.

If you find that you can't fix it yourself. Contact K&B (one of our vendors) they sell new, used and rebuilt PTO bells and the clutch disk .

Amazon has the clutch disk as well. That’s where I got my replacement. YouTube has some good video’s that can help with disassembly and the reinstall. The YouTuber snowrulesnate does a good one. It’s for a 520 -H but PTO clutch wise it’s the same process.

Your local Toro dealer can get you a clutch disc, too.  Kind of pricy, though.  If memory serves me right, there are 4 bolts holding the disc drive pulley. pulley.

 

While you have the clutch apart, check the bearings in the bell.  There are 2 ball bearings for the stub shaft and one roller bearing that runs on the crankshaft. Clean and lube the roller bearing with a high temp grease such as Lucas Red n Tacky.  Use just enough to coat the rollers - too much and it will get into the friction material on the clutch - not good.

 

If the ball bearings have a rubber seal, you can gently remove the seals with a small screw driver, to clean and grease the bearings.  Use the same grease as the roller bearings, then replace the seals.

@JCD clutch is telling you  of impending  related bearing issues , if the pto lever  engagement  is a rough / squealing   start , thats your relation to clutch / heat , cracking failure , agree with @8ntruck  on the  simple bearing clean out and re greasing . my decks spin / move by hand at the pto  down drive to deck  point , by hand . its the COLLECTIVE PULLY DRAG  that cooks  that clutch . as stated typical related bearings have wide rubber side shields , small putty knife , pocket flat screwdriver , lets you easily clean out original lube , carb cleaner flush out , re grease to same ammount , with a hi temp lucas chassis grease . having done , my 3 decks / drive set up , no noise or  issues , pete

there is a U shaped snap ring i recall - - might be a challenge if you have not removed one previously

:text-yeahthat:. There are "C" rings holding the bearings the bearings in.  You will need a pair of "C" ring pliers to make the job easier.

some KROIL  and snap ring plyers make quick work of those snap rings , once yo do this set up once .  the next  ones are much easier . that lubrication upgrade also made me  look for  same pulley/ size  type , but with a larger bearing , that could be repacked and also be refitted with a   3/8"  press in insert , typically  going from a 5/8  larger bearing bolt , to a 3/8  bolt bushing , for a wheel horse set up , paint it red , and its hiding in plane sight  , but its solidly  smooth / solid . just  a thought . pete
