Honda 4514

Hey all,

 

My dad has an old 4514 he's been using for years. I noticed the last few times I was over at his place it didn't look like he was using it anymore and was using another one of his mowers instead. I asked him what was wrong with it, and outside of all 4 tires being rotted out he had mentioned that it had a pretty wild engine whine at idle and didn't sound right.

 

Anyone familiar with these engines at all? It's a 2cyl liquid cooled engine with a driveshaft hooked on the back of it, the pto is at the front by the cooling fan. It makes a loud whine that almost sounds like an old ford power steering pump if you've ever been around an old ford 300 that sounds like it has a supercharger on it. When it revs up to higher rpms it either goes away or gets drowned out by the other noise. I just cannot isolate what the noise is, I'll try and get a video the next time I'm over. It doesn't sound like the pto but it's definitely coming from the engine bay area and not near the transmission or anything hydro related. It also started running a little rougher than what I remember at lower rpms, but I'm guessing it's just old gas and needle passages that need the junk ethanol gas ran through for a few hours.

 

I just grabbed a picture of one off of google since I forgot to take any pics or videos last night when I was over.

Brian - we got a 4213 for free a few years back - the Po was told it needed a starter ($385) and engine had to be removed to install it. Total estimate about $525. His loss, our gain.

Yup 2-cylinder liquid cooled - uses a serpentine timing belt that can (will) need to be replaced. Not cheap.

Had to go thru the carb and replace RF spindle / rim.

When that thing was running cutting grass, it was a beast... sold it after a year, it was just too big for my yard.

 

OE Honda Outdoor Power Parts are high end quality, but pricey

The transmission will whine some, louder when it's cold. If the noise is at the fan end of the engine and you're certain its not the transmission, then it's most likely the PTO bearings. I had a 4518 for about 20 years, when the PTO bearings seized that was what finally did it in. I had an old snapper RER to cut grass with for the short term, but I soon got tired of having to rely old equipment to cut grass every week so I got a john deere LA model while I gathered parts from ebay (OE parts were discontinued by then IIRC) to repair the PTO. Had to cut the old the off with an angle grinder but was able to get it repaired and back in service. I hung on to it for a few more years. Very nice high quality machine, but everything about it was unique and expensive. If you end up taking it on there used to be a few honda guys on the garden web forum back in the day

after thinking about it, it's not gardenweb it was the mytractorforum site that had a pretty strong group of honda guys
