Dorman 55818 fuel sending unit.

I have heard through the grapevine that the Dorman 55818 fuel sending unit will fit the Wheel Horse fuel tank.

Has anyone tried it ?

Electrically it is close but not perfect.

I can't find the exact specs on the mounting flange so I don't know if it fits or not.

I don't need a new sending unit right now, just curious.

Some sending units work backwards than others. For example back in the day a VDO sending unit would not work with a Stewart Warner gauge and visa versa. A customer tried it on a 250 gal diesel tank when he filled it and he had to drain out almost all of the fuel back out to change it.

I believe this unit can be flipped over to make the electrical part correct.

I am more worried about the actual flange mounting into the fuel tank.

I see Princess auto carries it as well here in Canada so next time I am going to a city that has a Princess auto store, I can take an old sender and do some comparisons.

Would Dorman tech be willing to share that by email?

I think that the 520H was the only tractor that had a gas tank made to accommodate a sending unit, but maybe there are others.  Here is the grapevine.

Yes, you are correct I believe. I think all the 500 series had it.

Most of my tractors are 520's and I have installed a 520 fuel tank in my 312H and one is also one is going in my Work Horse GT1600 as part of it's restoration.

The fuel gauge is the gauge I look at most (maybe because of the Onan fuel usage).

Problem is the sending units are not available new from Toro and used ones are getting harder to find in good working condition.

The fuel tanks from the 500 series seem easier to come by.

I vaguely remember seeing a thread on here where a member used a sending unit for a boat tank.  No idea how to find that post unfortunately.

Handy Don

I thought it was @Ed Kennell who found a way to get a broken one working again by subbing in components from one he found online.

I don't remember that Don.  But then my data storage area is overloaded.     I have replacer floats and sending units in some of my boat tanks.  Pretty important to never run dry in a boat.

The one had an 86 gallon tank.     My rule was burn 30 going out, 30 coming in, and 26 in reserve for that "O-s@#t event".
