Simplicity/Allis PTO Cone Clutch

Recommended Posts

WHX??

This might be a long shot but what the heck.

Nice older gentelman walks into my shop the other day looking to get the friction material lining replaced on a clutch cone that was used on many late 70's Simplecities & Allis Chalmers.

Told him I was a :wh: guy but would take a stab at it. Broaden my horizons don't ya know...:)

Same type of clutch used on a few horses ... C-195 & early RERs come to mind.

Turns out of course the part is made of unobtainium and NLA.

Wondering if anyone has a gently used one or could at least tell me what the thickness of the lining is. Maybe Maynard's brake band lining would work? Or material from McMaster Carr?

I did steal your pic from another thread @Wild Bill 633 and this is why I was lurking around on that other site... :hide:

I may just  send it out to one of the place mentioned in another thread ... thanks @squonk y.

Would like to try and reline myself ... just for practice.

The lining for a cone clutch will be a curved piece - sort of a smile shape - when it is flat so it will curl into a conical shape.  A brake band lining curls into a cylindrical shape, not a cone.

Simple shape to develop with the proper CAD program.

Possible to do on a drafting board with paper & pencil, too.  Been a long time since I've done that.  I'd have to look that method up.

Sounds like a UPS quote to ship an 8" plow $500

My grandfather and great-uncle re-did the cone clutch on their shared Model T several times, I was told. Lining was the latest technology--tanned leather.

A guy mentioned did it with a thick piece of leather Don.   It only lasted a couple years.  A tiller is hard on them.

Thank goodness tech has advanced from leather. Still, the T’s cone clutch inner cone was a slick invention for its time. It could be worked on with simple tools and leather was readiy available.

I have no idea how long a lining lasted but they were driving that car well into dilapidation until they could finally afford something newer.  He had a complete set of small hard-cover books that covered all the maintenance and repair needs that went to my Dad and are now with one of my nephews.I heard these stories from my grandfather 50 years after the events so some embellishments and omissions are likely!

Sent it out to the place @Wild Bill 633 mentioned ... 50 clams + 20 shop fee & shipping. Gal said they have done quite a few this year.

Will have to  ask if they do horse clutches.

:text-yeahthat: I'll bet that they could refurbish the cone type PTO clutch on a C-195 as well.
