Chain Piling - School Me !

Recommended Posts

oliver2-44

So I’ve read mention of “Chain Piling” numerous times. But no real specifics given. I’ve never seen or heard of it at a show around. I get the basic idea, but give me some specifics, judging, shortest stack, or is time also a factor, etc.
We’ve got a couple of shows around here over the next month. I’m thinking about setting up a little display/course and have some fun with it.

WHX??

Excellent idea Oliie.

This thread would not be complete without having Dan @Achto chime in. He's the one I learned it from.

Post 17 in the thread Richard mentioned.

@wallfish was going to try chain piles at the BS but don't know if he ever did. You know how hectic things get there!

There are other tractor games you may want to consider... barrel roll, trailer backing, slow race...

BTW hydros rule at chain piling. Also tractors without floor boards. You can see the pile better.

We start with a 30ft chain. You can only go forward & backwards to fold the chain into as small of a pile as you can in 2min time. You stop the tractor where ever you are when the time runs out. Measure the pile at it widest point, this includes any length of chain extending outside the pile. Smallest pile wins.

Don't forget a hitch pin of sorts to connect to various hitches. A tape measure & pen & paper to record results if playing for the money pile ...

@WHX?? @Achto  School me about barrel roll and how y’all do trailer backing?

We have the kids do the slow race and we do trailer backing through a zig zag timed course.

@Achto would be best off on this as he ran that game but basically mark out two lines so long and the rider bushes a plastic barrel with the front wheels through the lines without going out. Not sure if it was timed or not.

Trailer game was trying to back a trailer up from one marked out space to another. Timed also Dan??

Sorry no pics... :hide:

There is also the golf ball game Ollie ... Stick a piece of conduit in the ground with a golf or tennis ball on top. Whoever can get the closest with the front end without knocking the ball off wins.

Adult version you knock the ball off you have to take a shot...

barrel roll

The barrel pushing is best done with a narrow frontend tractor and is a timed event from starting line to finish line.

I have done a similar event with a large beach ball in front of a garden tractor, go too fast and the ball will get away from you and if you let a front wheel touch the ball it will rebound away. Same deal, timed event from starting line to finish line.

One of the ways I saw chain piling  or chain in a box as perfected by Richard Layne, is done with a square steel frame that goes in the ground to accept a chain, at least five feet long and narrow  ( less than one inch wide links) that the Wheel Horse operator moves back and forth on the rear of the tractor until most of the chain is within the interior of the steel frame on the ground.

It is quite a show when the Wheel Horse operator is skilled at forward and reverse movement with fast clutching and shifting!

Like @WHX?? said, we used a plastic barrel. Marked off a boundary that they had to stay inside of. Boundary was about 30yrds log & twice the width of the barrel. Timed event, can add a second on to their time or DQ for going out of bounds.

Trailer backing - I set up two stalls, a start & finish stall (painted lines on the ground about 1 1/2 times the width of the trailer). Then two cones. They had to back out of the first stall, do a figure 8 around the cones, & back into the finish stall. Timed event. Our best time on this was 50 seconds. Worst time 3 min.

Thinking about trying this event with a 4 wheel wagon next year, ought to be good for some laughs. :D

Another one i'd like to see is the "don't spill your drink" challenge...

Martini glass on the hood, filled with your preference of beverage, then start, go through cones etc., to the finish... he with the most in the glass wins!

I’ve spent the last 5 years backing a 53’ dry van trailer, and I have put it in some pretty difficult places. But put me on a tractor with garden cart or small trailer and I look like I just started CDL school. Lol

I added some length to my yard trailers. Also moved the axles back.

Helps a LOT.

The pull behind leaf sweeper is even more challenging. Hitch to axle length is about half the width of the sweeper, jack-knifes in a heartbeat. About the time you become proficient at backing it all the leaves are gone and it is time to put it away for another year.
