toma 12 #1 Posted September 24 Hi all. I purchased a Wheel Horse 522XI tractor for parts. The engine has 850 hours and after cleaning looks good. I am trying to get the engine running but it won't start. It has compression, spark, and it is getting fuel. I rebuilt the carb but it is acting the same way as it did before it was rebuilt. When turned over all I get a puff out of the carb. When I have the choke on full I get fuel spritzing out of the top of carb (when cranked). It is also loudly backfiring once in a while when cranked. Any ideas what might be happening? Ia m trying to avoid having to tear it apart. Video attached. Thanks engineprob.mp4

953 nut 55,393 #3 Posted September 24 Sounds like the intake valve isn't closing completely. This service manual should be helpful.
ri702bill 8,387 #4 Posted September 24 I agree - stuck valve or a heavy carbon buildup that is preventing it from closing. Perhaps timing, but the cough thru the carb says valve... Time to unbolt the head to give it a look see...

toma 12 #7 Posted September 26 Hi All...I removed the valve covers and everything looks good. Valves seem to be working so I removed the heads. The valves heads have a little carbon build-up but nothing major. None are stuck. Is it possible one of the hydraulic lifters is going? Could that be causing these symptoms?
