Keaton 437 #1 Posted September 19 (edited) I am working on my 1965 toro professional 58, it has a 5hp briggs and Stratton engine. I put a new carb on because the old one ran a but but leaked out of the pullout choke and I did not think those came apart but I may be wrong the o-ring was shot was my guess. I got it running on the new one, it runs of but when I go to throttle up it dies and it idle it goes from a bit of a high idle to low idle about every 20 seconds. don't know why. and it still leaks a bit I think I need to double up on the tank gasket or get some gas resistant gasket material. either way don't know, it runs at least I'm happy, I was in a rush before because I had a little craftsman I was trying to do and stole the coil off of it when installing back on toro I put it on backwardsm today I fixed that and took out the points. because I got electric ignition. I cleaned the flywheel too and the recoil pice because it was sticky, not shure what else needs done I got the oil changed. maybe a bit more matiance. went to start it and it popped off and then died and wont start agin i got the main jet at 1 1/2 truns out. any ideas Edited September 19 by Keaton
Keaton 437 #2 Posted September 19 and i forgot to mention the carb is a cheap carb because my plan was to swap seals over, it was a carb and air filter for $20 and because i did not want to wait another week to get a carb that one got here overnight. i tried to add as much detain to help, sorry it was so long
Skwerl58 705 #3 Posted September 19 If the old Briggs is a horizontal shaft those carb set ups can be head scratching. I would clean up the original one, install a good rebuild kit with diaphragm parts, use good carb to tank gaskets and check the fuel pick up tubes in the tank. Those pick up tubes can become brittle and then loose prime. I have a 71 or so that I have replaced the tubes, rebuilt the carb at least 3 times and after sitting for a few months I poor a little gas in the carb and it cranks right up. Keaton 437 #4 Posted September 19 thanks. the old carb leakes so much out of the pullout choke and I do not think those come apart so I did not have much choise, not shure why it does not stay at a steady idle. I cleaned the tank. I had it running about 10 minutes I felt like I had it almost tunes then it went into a lower idle and and would not throttle up again, these briggs work or they don't, my craftsman I got spark and cleaned the carb that was original but looked brand new fired up 2nd pull off break clean and ran on its own amazing. this one looked all good I need to mess with it some more.
