New (old) rear tires- wheels and paint

  The 857 I picked up this summer had 23x10.5 rear rubber that just looked to wide to me. Got these from my neighbors collection (thanks @Docwheelhorse) in a 23x8.5x12 size. 
  Primed and painted  . Used Rustoleum “rattle can” Cottage White

  Paint prep was fairly easy. Hard scrubbing to get em clean and grease free. Then a light sanding…that’s it! Don’t be fooled by the before pics, these were not as rusty as they appear in the pics. No scaly rust and no pitting to deal with.

when I have done larger rear rims to clean i have used the 90 degree angle grinder with 4 1/2 inch sanding sponge pad but of course due to size its limited manuverability - - so then i use the mini ingersol air grinder with the small 2 inch pads - - then also to get into the creases of rims i use the air Needle scaler which is nice for hard to reach joint creases that get the rust - - then naturally revert to hand sanding as necessary --- the combo of tools does the job to get rims pretty rust clean -- then prime and paint with cans -- overall they usuually look pretty good when done

using the player cards has worked well generally to protect the tires from over spray -- i have used the blue tape, or even the stick on saran type wrapping material a couple times, but overall just deflating the tire and sticking in the playing cards is pretty efficient - - of course the easiest painting is when the tires are off the rims -- haha

  I don’t think the playing card method would work for me. I mask off the front and back and then flip the wheel over on a pallet painting both the inside and outside in primer and then after I do a couple coats of the finish paint, flipping the wheel/tire over each time. The cards stick up and would have to be removed and installed numerous times whereas I mask off once and away I go priming and painting.

@Sparky  personally like the original ,  NAVAJO  WHITE ,  don,t have any show queens , but clean wheels do help out overall look , most of my paint is recovered , original , like the maintained patina look , pete

Sparky: Your masking tape approach makes lots of sense for the efficiency of time for flipping tires for the primer and the top coat --- I've used various methods -- one thing i did discover when i do the tape method is to buy the wider tape because i used to buy the narrow role but the wider certainly covers more surface with less labor applying it

as an alternative to using masking painters tape for the tire/rim painting projects, here are some of the rolls of the sticky "saran" wrap type packing material that can be used -- easy to apply and fit onto tires - different widths can cover lots of surface

I demount the tire sand blast the rim and paint then remount and touch up any nicks/scrtatches

you're lucky guy - - dont have that demount equipment -- i have to take to a tire shop and spend $$ -- also they then chip the new paint on rim edges -- ugh!!

  Peter…I think Navajo White has been replaced with Cottage White, same color paint but with a new name The use of an Indian name probably wasn’t politically correct anymore, like with the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Redskins. Same but with a new name.

@Sparky  thank you for that , ever been to winslow arizona ?  burger king there is famous / known for the NAVAJO CODE TALKERS , talk about indians ! code talkers  were from a different time / zone , in addition  to spectacular  scenery , a number of very good  eat spots . pete
