1973 8. 4speed 8 speed swap

I have a 73 4 speed no name.  I have got a 8speed out of a 73 no name 12 i believe.  It was at a scrap yard and i got it but the hood and the I'd tags were gone.   Only thing that looks different is the axle width.  My 4 speed has what looks like alot longer axles..   the donor had 2 pedals mine has 1.  I got all the linkages and such. But would this be a direct replace.  Will it need both pedals or just thr one like I have.   Mower is used to pull plow and work garden. No Mower deck on it.  But I am curious what is in store to do the transmission swap.   I can provide any pictures if need be just tell me what you need...

Welcome! Look at the mounting of the brake band on both - I believe you will find they are quite different. The 4 speed band pulls from the top, the 8 speed from the bottom. I did an 8 speed swap on my 854 - uses only one pedal and required the brake rod from a Raider to make it work. Had to loose the parking brake, Lo renge in 1st is about as good!

Not really just want the slower speeds for what I'm using it for...

I see that now that u said it.   If I understand what I've researched.  I have a 5025 currently in it.  And the 8 speed donor is a 5091.

Nuther option is a larger input pulley.

BUT... That gives you a lower range, slower ground speed ALL the time. No regrets having the 8 speed with the "magic" Hi-Lo lever... best of both worlds.

I'm gonna run some atf through this 8speed and clean it up and flush it out good before I make my decision on the swap.  The gear oil was milky and i drained it when 1st got it and refilled it to top with fresh fluid  and its been sitting about 6 months now.  I know it needs new axle seals and shifter boots.  Got the seals at my local mom n pop auto parts store.  Thanks to the cross ref# chart.

So I got very lucky in this swap I guess.   The 8speed brake hook up and everything is exactly the same as the 4 speed.  Only difference is hub to hub of 8 speed is 22 1/2in. The 4 speed is 26 1/2in

The 8 horse 4 speed tractors used 10-inch rear wheels with different offsets from the standard 12-inch wheels used on most models other models. That’s what the longer axles were for- proper wheel space at the transmission. 
 

A direct swap with an 8-speed will work. You just may have a couple things to work out. You can easily add spacers on the shorter axle tranny hubs to make up clearance. You can also likely swap brake linkages from the donor tractor to make up for the drum location change.
