Brockport Bill 1,661 #1 Posted September 14 I found a tractor with name plate 91-16b802 ---- indicating a 1979, C161 8 speed with Briggs twin ( actually it has a replacement BS 18 hp on it # 422437 ) - the master chart shows a trans for that tractor of WH 5086 --- i have heard of the Eatons - and the sunstrand -- but am interested in info on this 5086 -- i went through the search topics and scrolled -- lots of technical info -- but I am more interested in the history and experience of the trans for reliability, durability etc and any issues i should be aware of ?????? Also interested what kind of re-sale used market demand is out there for 5086 --- thanks, Bill
ebinmaine 67,462 #2 Posted September 14 That should be the standard issue 8-speed that Wheel Horse used for.. maybe three decades++? 1 1/8" axles. Open differential. Extremely tough reliable transmission. I've opened up a dozen or so of those here. Common things to replace would be the shifter boot, brake shoe, all four seals, one or both outer wheel bearings. All other bearings would be inspected. Rarely have I replaced another one. Other than that we see the occasional broken shifter fork. I've personally never seen one.
pfrederi 17,738 #3 Posted September 14 (edited) Inrteresting engine may not have been the only thing swapped out. Tranny manual shows 103916 for a c-161 Briggs twin. (1-1/8" 8 pinion) 5086 is 1" 4 pinion used in several other models... I have never broken any WH gear tranny... Measure you axles....
