glenn27 71 #1 Posted September 12 Morning all-long time since I've been over here-and haven't been to the last three/ four shows. Just other things in life, plus getting older-have slowed down some- Anyway-I took on this little project for a neighbor up the road. This lady friend has had this Raider 12 forever, but it has never run right/consistantly. Several people have taken 'whacks' at it- and then it just sat and sat. Anyway-she is borrowing a rider to cut her yard right now-but I told her the only way I'd work on it was to do it right and try to get it back close to OEM. So I have the time-but I'm getting very frustrated with after market parts. Pure junk! I fixed all the wiring/new ignition switch which I had in stock-she doesn't care about the lights-so I let them go. Got the shifter freed up=-put a new boot down there. Get the steering pretty decent again. OK_now to the fuel system-cleaned and drained the tank-new fuel lines/ shut off and little filter. Carb is fairly new,but someone been screwing w/ the adjustment screws. POld metal it was leaking where it goes together....Have tried three plastic ones-one Amazon (two from Napa which seem a little better, but all break or don't work after 30 minutes-I did get it to run about that long so i could adjust on the carb. Now I'm pretty disgusted after returning the last plastic pump to Napa-I'm going to order the diagrham kit for the old metal pump from ISAVETRACTORS and see if that will work. Really tired of screwing w/ this-the little tongue thing on the plastic pumps just keep getting loose and falling out.... I may have to get in touch w/ Wild Bill Pearson who lives fairly close and see what he thinks, if he even fools w/ his stuff anymore. Thanks for any help, and letting me vent. Still got real axle seals to replace and change the tranny oil. Sharpen the blades. C Ya! glenn
ebinmaine 67,397 #2 Posted September 12 Sounds like you're headed the right way. I'd seriously consider an electric fuel pump. Get a good brand. Not a cheap one. Facet 60245 or 60304. Mr. Gasket 42s electric pump. Carter P4070.
Handy Don 12,204 #3 Posted September 12 An electric pump may be the simplest option for you. That said, if you don’t see any significant wear/corrosion/deterioration on the metal pump mechanicals and the check valves can be restored or replaced, you might well be able to save it with a repair kit. The new diaphragm will seem oddly sized, as it has to be “scrunched” in to allow it to flex with the pumping action (the rubber is intended to flex but not stretch so if it is drum tight, the pump cannot pump). There is another vendor of these kits besides IST, but I cannot recall the name. Maybe @ebinmaine can chime in with it?

If someone put an aftermarket carb on it you have a 50/50 chance of getting it adjusted properly. If you look inside the carb from the choke end you should see some numbers like 26 (I'm nut sure what engine you have, but guessing Kohler 12hp K301) If it doesn't have and numbers embossed in the aluminum throat, its an Aftermarket carb. I hope the carb works out for you! One of the many problem with after market carbs is they make one size and sell them to fit 3 or more engine sizes. One the smaller size engine the carb doesn't idle good, but has good top end. On the larger size engines the carb idles good but doesn't rev up to top end. If that carb doesn't work out, ask her if the original carb is around somewhere and rebuilt it. It sounds like this Horse is lucky it found you, always good to hear of a Horse being saved. Call Wild Bill, he needs more to do!

glenn27 71 #9 Posted September 13 Thanks-Guys for the info so far. I've com,e too far and done too much to throw the towel in now, but last few days been busy w/ home/yard duties and shutting the pool down for the winter. Hope to get back to it today, maybe. And yes-I did speak w/ original Wild Bill last night=-he gave me a couple ides.... glenn
glenn27 71 #10 Posted October 1 Well-it's been a couple weeks and NOT much progress--if any. Three plastic after market pumps-two from NAPA-better quality, but still didn't make the grade. Got that mechanical rebuild kit for the metal one-redid the original metal one off the tractor (someone had been in there before. Did have to file down that little plunger some to make it fit-Installed yesterday-still not pushing the gas thru-I can feel the outside-it;s cold-so there is gas inside of it-just none coming out the outlet. Going to do one more thing today,. pressure ize the gas tank w/ a couple blast from the air hose-see if that works. If not-I'm pretty much at a dead end. We are going out to some brunch this morning-I'll stop by the owner's house and see if she wants to spring for a new electric pump or not. Maybe that is the way I should have gone to start with. Kinda running out of enthusism here--I got other things to do in my life. Anyway-that is where we stand now glenn

glenn27 71 #12 Posted October 1 Yepper Ed. Going to look in my junk box for a piece of metal to make a plate out of, after I talk to the owner-she is supposed to stop by today after work on her way home. glenn
glenn27 71 #13 Posted October 1 One other questions or the members who have replaced w/ a electric one-how about needing some sort of flow regulator-or is the psi so low it's not a problem??

The rubber diaphragm must not be stretched tight inside the pump lest it not have enough flex to move fuel. The metal plunger on the diaphragm must latch snuggly into the actuator arm--any slack will lessen the pump’s effectiveness. Also, the two check valves (at the inlet and the outlet) must be working properly. The inlet valve must open as fuel is being drawn in while the outlet valve prevents fuel back flowing from the carb. Then the inlet closes and the outlet opens as the diaphragm pushes the fuel. If either valve is not closing then the fuel just sloshes back and forth.

I need to fix this machine and move on-Tks for the help! glenn _PS_Faucet one ordered. Edited October 3 by glenn27 add more info.
glenn27 71 #19 Posted October 22 Ok-good day again..Finally rounding back around to the Wheelhorse repair... Question now-have the electric pump in hand-looks like they want to mount it at a 45 degree angle down on a frame rail maybe, and close to the fuel tank. Options Are pretty crowded on this tractor. |Can anyone post me some pictures where they mounted theirs?? I'll go out and sit down on my stool and rattle brain on it more tomorrow. Thanks in advance- glenn
ebinmaine 67,397 #20 Posted October 22 I have mine bolted directly to the side of the engine. Not sure if I'm going to leave it there long-term. There are folks that say the vibration from the engine could be harmful to the fuel pump.
glenn27 71 #21 Posted October 22 That is what I was thinking also-about the vibrations over a long period. Also thought about on the right side-mounting down low on the belt shield-but same concern about vibrations. glenn
