It ran but wouldn't idle down and baulked on throttle-up. It had the 26mm throat which was correct for the 10 to 12 HP but when I opened it up I saw the main jet was much larger which would have been on the 14 to 16 HP engine. That thing was never going to work well on either one as shipped. I changed out the main jet and needle from the old Carter as well as replacing the plastic float and all went well. 3
Retired Wrencher 5,512 #53 Posted October 17 @WHX?? Sounds like this three pager is getting close to being done. That is the best part having good friends as a project. I have at one time found one sitting under a deck or a porch for 25 years. Brought that one back to life. I hope you enjoy it. 2

On working tractors I don"t know it that makes any difference.
peter lena 8,726 #55 Posted October 21 @ohiofarmer regularly " feed " any painted surface with lubrication, especially the older neglected anything , usually like a penetrating type oil spray first , for a spray / soak penetration , also like a warm finish / indoors or outside sun , to enhance paint feed . clean soft cloth with more penetrant , wipe down , might even , luck out with a paint break thru grunge state , at that point , like a 6" electric palm buffer , cleaner wax , usually breaks thru , not a show queen , but definitely better than it was . my 3 horses have all been buffed out with lubrication base . never expect to go from neglect to show queen , very happy to have lubrication based paint recovery , always looks period correct ,another thing about lubrication recovery , is a quick touch up , very easy , always looks good , dust / dirt free , pete

WHX?? 49,175 #59 Posted December 16 Been having problems with this girl and haven't worked on it in awhile. @Achtocome over to scrounge parts and we tinkered with it for abit. It started and ran but wouldn't throttle up and run with out choke. Carb right?? I had put an offshore on it so we just thought I got a bad one. Fuel pump checked good. Dug the original Carter out of the cleaner and put a carb kit on it. Did the same thing no throttle but idled great. Just for grins put a different condenser on it and runs great. Might just throw the offshore on it to see if indeed that's what it was. 5

Lane Ranger 10,992 #65 Posted December 16 Jim: I am glad you are saving this 856! Over the years I have bought three 856's and each one for $350. Also sold them for $350. But each one was a great tractor and in what I would call original patina condition. I really regret not keeping one of these as they were a good all around Wheel Horse model. Not sure how many of these Wheel Horse sold but it must have been a lot and they were surely prized by their owners from the ones I have seen over the years. It is a very good thing you did -not passing this one up!!! 1
WHX?? 49,175 #66 Posted December 16 Absolutely Lane ... Bret Esse of the Portage show sold me a trailer load of horses at a real good price and there was a 856 on it. I just rolled it off the trailer and there it sat outside unloved for a couple of years. I have a 857 so gave it to Dan and he got got it running without much effort. One fine little tractor. We named it Pale Face ... 1

953 nut 55,827 #68 Posted December 17 20 hours ago, WHX?? said: Just for grins put a different condenser on it and runs great. Jim, I bet I have posted this information fifty times over the years. If an engine idles well, but runs erratically when revved up, like it hits and misses, pops and backfires, then chances are, it needs a new condenser/capacitor. And always install a condenser/capacitor with the wire facing downward so rain water and/or when washing off engine, water will not enter inside condenser/capacitor, ruining it. With water inside the condenser, this will also allow it to idle well, but cause it to run erratically when revved up. 1
WHX?? 49,175 #69 Posted December 17 (edited) Yep and Dan told me that too moons ago ... it finally stuck ... BTW this girl sat outside with no hood. and the wire pointing up. The problem with the wire pointing down is wire length seldom allows it. Edited December 17 by WHX??
