WHX?? 49,175 #1 Posted September 12 (edited) This one sitting in a field rotting away. So I rescued it. Tractor heavy and already have a 856 that needs love and I can't seem to give away. Saw it at a show several weeks ago and it was sitting there crying save me save me. I jokingly offered the owner a frankie for it and much to my surprise he took it. Motor was locked up so pulled it back to camp for a look see. @Achto @Wild Bill 633 and I commenced to wrenching to find out the motor is free but the SG is tight. Got it loosened up and messed with the points. Exhaust valve stuck open ... pop the head and free that up. Fired right off and drives. Service motor and seller says he has the original I could have but knowing him doubt I'll see it. Four year old Battery was stone cold dead... not a volt in it. Threw it on a charger and it did take a charge and seems to be holding it. Surprise surprise. Tires are abit needy but nothing serious. Best part everything is there, original cigar lighter woo hoo, and fairly unmolested. On the splash pad ready for a bath... sheet metal really straight. Seat & hitch worth the price of admission... Retired Wrencher 5,512 #7 Posted September 12 Jim as fellow 856 owner that seat is the price of admission. Looks savable. Just take your time with it dry it out in a sunny room put some leather conditioner on it and re-pad if needed. I hope you put some time into this one. I did this one this year. 1

peter lena 8,726 #9 Posted September 12 @WHX?? different views , splash pad or oil down ? personally would only oil soak down patina , thats my first transition on any rusty pick up I get . don,t even touch the finish for days , just let it soak in the recovery process , that oiled look would enhance what's there , would also rub it down with a clean oiled cloth , do not , sand or remove any of that base coat . just me , pete
Mike'sHorseBarn 3,014 #10 Posted September 12 Great score for a benny! If it was me I probably would get it mechanically right and leave it in the rough. 2

Thought is Wrencher after the EB check list is to put a eight inch plow on it and use it for a house tractor at plow day since I sold the no '73 name 8 I had set up. If that happens yah the seat will get swapped out for a beater. Either way it will probaly go on a resto or a more refined tractor. 19 minutes ago, peter lena said: splash pad or oil down It will get a gentle power washing. The tunnel is filled with dirt and crap but after that just something for the to die for patina. Fer sure leave it rough Mike. Paint has never been messed with. I shoulda got a pic before we moved it. Grass and weeds growing up thru it and filled with grass clippings. Choke and throttle froze up solid so saving those is going to be work.
peter lena 8,726 #12 Posted September 12 @WHX?? that choke / throttle issue , 2 choices , replace the cables or , kroil , knock r loose , penetrating oil , with an extension spring on the close side of connection mount . initial soak down , if you can get it to move , to any degree , put spring on opposite end to assist movement , done that , and have that spring assist on all my cable control movement start points . think about it , every time you move the cable , you have a spring at the other end , helping you to pull it closed / off . do a trial on an existing movable cable , to test / try pull assist , like having a 3 rd arm , experiment , it works , pete

Achto 27,803 #14 Posted September 12 (edited) I'm not usually one who likes to be wrenching while at a show, but this was a fun project. Once we knew the engine was free, I inspected the fuel system to find that it was dry & clean. Given these facts I knew that with a little "field triage" we would be able to get it running. Open cylinder head surgery is usually not recommended in the field, but in this case it was worth the risk. Was great to see the look on the PO's face when Jim drove it by him. Which of course he forgot it cause him and Dan went out and got hammered at the local dive bar nite before. Had his gf bring it so I have it. Said he had a set of the older weights he let me have for 50 clams... sold I says. He forgot them too. Supposedly coming to plow day so said he would bring them. Looking at the end of the crank shaft in your photo it looks that way to me.

Would like to grind off them welds and check it out as the pulley could go in another 1/8. Not serious tho and if it ain't broke don't fix it I guess.
