Overcharging the Battery?

Recommended Posts

85wheelhorse

Hello,

I have a question regarding my '85 416-8 K341.

I recently had to replace the battery since the old one wasn't holding a charge anymore (it was a little over 7 years old).

When I replaced the battery, I also replace the positive battery cable since it was badly corroded and cleaned the chassis ground from the negative cable.

The other day I noticed my voltmeter reporting that the battery was being charged at 15 to 16 volts. I don't remember it ever charging at more that 14.5 volts before this.

Has anyone here had a similar experience with this before? What do you all consider to be a normal charging voltage? This seems abnormally high to me.

I look forward to seeing your responses. Thanks!

Check the condition of the voltage regulator ground - the housing must be properly grounded . Oxidation at the mounting bolts is a common problem.......

Also check the voltage with a hand held meter to confirm the tractor gauge is accurate.

Cleaning the battery connections and replacing a faulty cable were a good start. Bill and Mike have offered a couple of good suggestions.

If the new battery has removable caps you may want to check the water level, could be a bit low.

5 th pictur down @85wheelhorsehttps://www.google.com/search?q=electrical+bolt+on+lugs&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS866US866&oq=electrical+bolt+on+lugs&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIJCA  often suggest this type of bolt on ground point / electrical connection , especially battery to frame / engine  grounding , another poor engine ground point is the  COOLING TINS , often  rust based , personally like the lower engine corner / frame area clutch pedal area, 5th picture down , that battery ground cable   assures  clean mount spot / frame / engine , also like a DIELECTRIC  spray to enhance bolt down . pete

It is best to fully charge a new battery before putting it in service.  Your previous readings were with an old and spent battery and your present readings are with an unknown.
