another one followed me home, a old toro

yesterday afternoon I went to get a tractor I guess you could call it off Facebook market, and I got there and went to take a look at it and it was a lot smaller than I thought, it is a 1965 toro professional 58 in cut reel mower, it has 2 bat wing reels in the front, it runs ok, carb leaks and needs rebuild and tank has crap in it, but pretty simple, I had it running for a good 2 minutes playing with the choke. its neat looking and I got pictures of the manual because he had the toro dealer book, he only had one horse a suburban that he would not let go of and a few springfeild type toros, he had over 100 tractors in a barn down the road I have not seen them yet but I want to buy a reel mower a push one he has also. but enough of that I'll get a few pics of it and it has a big crack in the hood. its plastic so we can plastic weld it. and the back wheel folds in for a storage mode I guess, I will add pics after I get home I just have 3 now.

@Keaton  looks good to me, lots of steel in that one , might try running that in on a seperate gallon of heavily treated gas . carb bowl is probably loaded with debris . those reel mowers were very stout , get after the , linkage ends , moving mount areas , penetrating oil first , for creeping action , then red aerosol spray grease , extension tube for detailing. neat project , pete

Suspect Toro uses 58" Professional as a model name.

Do you have the model number? Possibly 03100?

Can't find anything on the 03100 which is 4hp.

Found this on the 03102 which has a larger engine.

@Keaton  as stated , noticing , dry cable , rusty  connection areas , made a point of that on a number of tractors sold , like waking it up from the dead . those older units were very solidly built , NAPA  has a very good chain / cable lube  MACS # 1370 , would be perfect on that , like lucas chassis grease , shell  rotella  oil .30 wt , stay at it , pete

This is a great machine to have, I guess this is the older version of the zero turn!  We sold and maintained several of these '58s', they worked great, hopefully you'll be able to find someone to sharpen it!  I'm going to guess that it will be hard to find parts for the Toro part, but the B&S parts should be available.  I don't believe this has a carb bowl, and has something like a flow jet carb/tank version (the carb sits right on top of the fuel tank).  Back when these were built, they all had the Toro with bullhead logo, which I recently saw on something new I saw, so it was good to see it back!

I have a good lube and chain lube and I got some of that tacky red greese I will lube it all

that was my guess alsom I need to change the oil and lube it then I should be good to go try it out. and I'm shure I'll make new friends with a flat file because I want to go buy another reel mower from the same guy that had 2 reel mowers that attach to it.

 

so I got the tank cleaned out last night with solvent and BBs it took 4 tires but I was happy, the carb gas pickup tibe was clogged bad, I got it cleaned and put all back together, and of course my luck the recoil spring broke. and I had another engine that was parts that was all taken apart so I took the spring from that and put it in the toro second try the first time it was not wount up enough, I got it though on my first try unlike my lawn ranger recoil, I took the head off because how bad the inside of the carb was and blew the dirt and crap out, and cleaned under the head,  and I did not the patience till wait to Saturday for new gaskets so I made my own, they should do for now. I'll work on it more today and I think my dad is going to plastic weld the hood for me because it was cracked down the middle pretty bad. that's all for now, thanks for the help,

I got myself in a pickle again, like always like a bad habit that comes back around I cant ever figure out throttle linkages, I have never been able to, I doubt anyone can really help me on here I may reach out to a few more local small engine shops after tomorrow night if I cannot figure it out. don't have any pictures that are worth a darn so, I gotta to try to figure it out, in the mean time I greesed and lubed the machine and changed oil because it was low and miky last time

@Keaton  like 3-1  orange can penetrating oil , very good on cabling  / throttle / choke , take advantage of any higher starting spot , letting it creep on its own , to lower areas , might even add a small extension spring  to end point cable hook up , having spring constantly pull toward closure , thats like a power cable pull assist , have that on all my throttle / choke set ups . also love KROIL  penetrating oil , pete
