ebinmaine 67,493 #2 Posted August 29 I used what used to be called a universal fluid that was good for Dexron 2, Mercon, and Ford type something or other.
squonk 41,109 #4 Posted August 29 Dexron/Mercon works fine. Others have had good results with hyd fluid. 2 1

Mercon is a Ford-branded ATF, it replaced Type F. It has since been replaced by Merc V which many consider to be inferior. 1

I use Schaeffer 115 Simplex Torque Converter Fluid, a heavy duty replacement for type A transmission fluid in the Eaton 1100 in my 416H. No problems at all. Packed in a 2½ gallon jug.

pfrederi 17,739 #10 Posted August 31 Sunstrand 90 series hydro units like the ones in WHs were used by several tractor manufactures. Bolens JD etc.. I looked up some of the fluid recommendations by the other users. Everything from ATF, Motor oil, Tractor hydro fluid, and of course John Deeres own blend. Change fluid and filter by directions don't mix stuff and you will be OK. No need to overthink things....
