Vinco 33 #1 Posted August 22 I have a 1981 C-175 that has some kind of internal engine damage, and I have a slightly later model Magnum 18 Twin engine on which the starter spins but the bendix doesn't engage. I'm quite sure I will have to pull both engines to get to the starters, but my question is whether the two starters will interchange. Can I pull the one off the blown up KT17 and use it on the (hopefully good) M18? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
953 nut 55,393 #2 Posted August 22 Yes. The starter on the KT-17 and KT-19 are the same as the M-16, M-18 and M-20 horizontal or vertical crankshaft engines. Removing the hood will give you ample access to get at the starter, no need to pull the engine. The starter on your 18 twin may just need to have the shaft cleaned and lubricated with some dry graphite lubricant. 2 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Before you pull it apart, try spraying the area with a spray can that has a straw to reach in there. If the starter gear is steel you can use carb cleaner. if it looks like while plastic use a gentler cleaner or even WD 40.
