Gators for a 42RD

Recommended Posts

Sparky

My 42” RD could use new blades…are the Gator blades all they’re cracked up to be?
The TORO number for the 3 blade kit is 106635. The Gator blade website doesn’t cross reference numbers, anyone use them and can share the Gator number?

Related item - I like to use the Gator style blade on a walk behind trimming mower. It is a high lift blade that has the additional "chopper" teeth to recut DRY glass clippings. About euqally as bad as any other blade when cutting wet grass.......

I have Gators on a couple of my mowers and they are good blades. High lift and are usually made heavier and they hold up well. Sorry I can't help with the paart number.

If your just looking to replace your blades with something a bit cheaper than the OEM set just buy some aftermarket standard lift ones. RD deck don't really cut any better with high lift blades including Gator blades.

Not yet. But we are working on one that will be used out in the area surrounding the garden.

I have Gator blades for 3 different tractors now.  1 is a 10hp Wheel Horse with a 37” deck.  I think the blades work just as good as the standard ones.  And a little better in some ways.  The lift is noticeably more and it chops the grass up a little more, but not as much as the other 2 non WH 54” & 60” 25hp+ tractors.

So, I say it’s an improvement just don’t expect a whole lot from a shallower WH deck.  Your 42” may be even better.

I’m refurbishing a 48” WH 78631 deck at the moment and I do plan on putting Gator blades on it.

After that, I have a 42” deck to restore and I plan to do the same with it; so it would be interesting to see how it works out for you if you decide to try it.

Oh, and as for which Gator blades to get, I just find the ones of the same length.  Sometimes you can find a set of three, sometimes individually;  and sometimes a pair which isn’t ideal, but maybe a pair and a single.  As long as they’re the right length you should be good.

G1 is standard, G3 is better and G5 is best/toughest/thickest.  But G3’s are certainly tough enough (G1’s probably are too, I just don’t own any of those).

I've got 2 42" RD's, one with a recycler baffle and the other is completely naked. I've been using Gator G3 90 Blades from Jack's Small Engines, Part# 90-643 and I think they are great for my needs. I run 6 blades (3 Gators and 3 non Gators)under the recycler specifically for mulching leaves in the Fall. The grass deck only has Gators.

Good luck!

I just found this with a search for 90-643:

https://www.amazon.com/Oregon-90-643-Replacement-Mower-Blade/dp/B0018U2F04

Perhaps Gator sold them to Oregon and they make a copy. There were a bunch of other hits as well, so take a look when you have a moment.

Amazon says unavailable, Google the Oregon 90-643 for other options.

Sorry guys.  I was in a hurry and didn't look as closely as I should have.

That said, here's another link and these folks appear to have them :

https://www.agrisupply.com/toro-wheelhorse-mower-blade/p/58033/

These are the Oregon blade that Lee1977 mentions.  I think mine are all Oregons as well.

@Sparky  I have a set of those on the shelf that I used on a 42" deck until I got the recycler insert the deck was missing. I'm almost positive that's where they came from.
