I'm haveing an issue where by when I turn the ignition the first few times a massive spark crackles off the positive terminal

any ideas? And if someone could show me location  photos of the external electrical parts and their names. The manual drawings I have aren't completely clear. I might have to replace something and I want to be able to identify

Any chance you are using a coil for a magneto engine and you have a battery type coil?

Where the spark occurs is usually where the problem is. sounds like a dirty / loose connection right there on the positive terminal. Hight resistance drops voltage which raised amps which lets the spark out! :helmet:

12.??  volts though?

To properly test a battery the meter needs to be able to read fractions of volts.

Example:

A battery that shows below 12.45 volts with no load MAY be OK but must be  charged before proper load testing.

Had a new name brand battery (340cca) a few months ago that would check good but would not turn my 701 over. Had it load tested at the FLAPS that it came from and they said it checked good also but made them swap it out anyway. So long story short it 2nd battery would wring the 701's tail so the first battery had to be bad. The 701's doesn't have the automatic compression release so takes a pretty good battery to turn them over. Glad I had enough sense that day to try new battery instead of tearing into the starter/generator :laughing-rolling:.
