Magnum 12 runs in off position

Recommended Posts

Goldnboy

I recently swapped a Magnum 12 and replaced all the old wires with new.

I can start the engine and must turn the key to the off position after engaging the starter and it starts or the engine dies.

So basically the off and on positions are switched.. I tried two different key switches with the same result.  When key is in the on position the lights work and in the off position the do not.

The wiring diagram below is what i used but also included a ammeter in the battery circuit  from b on keyswitch to solenoid.

My post where I put a Magnum 12 in a 520 and had the same result is on page two.

I had the two wires coming out of the engine wrong. White wire is for the Mag,purple is for the charging wire. I had them switched.

Is yours wired that way??

Yes it is!

I have a white and purple wire from engine.

All the 312 wire diagrams show dark blue for magnum which I assumed faded to purple

I fought this thing for a week and half before I figured out I had the two wires switched. 20240809_153931.jpg.e3d5e739d03b16692c1c26e7c3e17d0f.jpg

What type ignition system did the old engine have, safety system is different on battery systems? Did you replace all of the wiring with using the diagram above?

The 103-991 switch will have continuity between the Ground, Magneto and Accessory. If your magneto is connected to the "M" it should not run in OFF.

So the only safety switch is your clutch switch and it is not on the ignition wiring.

You need to use a meter and verify that the switch is operating properly and the wires from the various components are on the correct terminals.

clueless

The white wire (kill wire) from the engine connects to the M on the switch, the purple/violet wire connects to the R on the switch.

I just switched the two ...purple (brown on my switch)and white wires to the key and it solved the issues...

Thanks all...
