C81 transaxle leaking fluid at the axle.

Recommended Posts

Tonyp

This is a 1979 C81, Lately I have noticed light leaking at the left axle where it enters the transaxle. Its not that big of a deal and  its not  a big amount, but it is a slight leak .

Is this something that is fixed easily ? I suspect its an axle seal.   What's involved,?  I'm not afraid to tackle  it.

Thx in advance !

Tony - easy...Maybe. A total PITA, perhaps. Usually the fluid leak juices up the hub-to-axle connection to allow a very easy hub removal. Other times... a horror show. Research the postings on RS  about hub removal - both successes and gross failures.A lot depends on the type of puller used......

@Tonyp  have any KROIL  OR KNOCK R LOOSE  , aerosol  penetrant ?  would back out the set screw / bolt on the wheel flange , leave wheel at 12 noon  for open bolt hole , penetrant soaking also each end of the wheel flange to axel point , recommend  a bearing removal  bolt on clamp , really helps in preventing a broken flange agree with @ri702bill  on that , also get a  screw in PACKING PULLER , for seal removal . lots of reference on that issue ,  look it up,   pete

Thx for the replies. I did look up the seal removal/replacement  and indeed it is rather easy .   I have had both hubs off this tractor  very recently for new  lock down  screws and keys ,  I expect they will pull right off exposing the axle and seals.

Famous last words--- We'll see....

Now to just get the proper seals  which appear to be 1-1/8, but I have to confirm.
