!Freddy 4 #1 Posted August 6 Hello,,new here,,greetings from the frozen tundra of NW Ontario.I just acquired this 633. I’ve wanted one of these for years just because i like their appearance. This one came up on FB so hooked up the wagon and dragged it home,,,cuz the rear end is locked up. The tractor is complete but the fist full clump of poop that came out of transaxle not good. Not sure how i will deal with this…a good used transaxle would be ideal. I do have a Sears SS12 4speed that i could cobble on but id rather not as im not in any hurry and the SS12 is complete machine. My only purpose for the machine will be for pulling a cart occasionally, possibly a mower deck or grader blade. 3
ri702bill 8,479 #2 Posted August 6 (edited) Fred - Welcome!! Looks to be fixable - seen a lot worse. Figure on the 4 seals, a case gasket, maybe more. Check the condition of the second / third gear - the engagement surface is usually worn to a point where it jumps out of gear under load. The is a great tutorial on rebuilding these here on RS. Look under Tutorials / Transmissions 5085 Transmission Rebuild. Internal parts are available, but it can be a tad pricey..... Not an overly difficult job, just messy... Achto 27,742 #3 Posted August 6 (edited) Nice looking tractor. That transmission should be savable. Hear a source for a bearing, seal, & gasket kit. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/base-kit-1-for-manual-transmission/ If the large 1533 bearings are bad then you will need this kit instead. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/kit-1-with-2-1533-bearings-for-manual-transmission/ Inspect your 3rd gear closely. If you question it's condition, post a pic of it & we'll help you decide on its condition. Will mainly need to see the inner teeth of the gear. If you need 3rd gear, this is the only source for a new replacement. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/3523-3rd-gear/ I was able to bring this transmission back to life. 953 nut 55,734 #4 Posted August 6 Cool looking tractor, how far did you have to push that cart to bring it home? Here is a thread that you should find helpful. @stevasaurus is the man on these transmissions and has posted several great threads on repairing them. 2
oliver2-44 9,847 #5 Posted August 7 That should clean up and be very savable. Show us what the inside of the differential looks like since it was locked up! A big wash tub and a gallon of diesel or your favorite water based degrease will make it look a lot better Then some quality time with a bench grinder wire wheel and it will look a lot better. Definitely a messy job ! The 4 speed transmissions are fairly easy to reassemble. If you decide to remove the shift forks watch out for those 2 little balls and spring in there. If you loose the balls, you can get replacements in those parts drawers at your favorite hardware store. I'm saving this one, but it will need a "few" used-new to me parts. Thankfully I found some 8 speed parts transmissions last year. 4
WHX?? 49,130 #6 Posted August 7 Your tranny is totally savable. Worst work is cleaning. I saved this one. Show and tell Ollie? ... 5
stevasaurus 22,841 #8 Posted August 7 Welcome to Red Square !! You should have the 5025 transmission in that Horse. The thread that @953 nut posted is of the 4 speed version, not quite the same trans as yours, but it has the videos. This other thread is like your transmission, but just with pictures. The difference is your trans has the brake drum mounted on the mushroom gear shaft. The 4 speed has the brake drum on the cluster gear shaft. Other then that, they are the same. There is a few reasons why your trans would not shift. This what to look for, and it may be a combination of things. 1. the crud is keeping the shift rails from doing their thing. 2. the shifter was locked between gears. 3. The differential gears are full of crud. 4. One or more of the bearings are full of junk. Let us know, but that trans is in good shape and is worth saving.
