Belt to small?

So I have the right belt  length but it's getting chewed up ( shavings coming off) and not stopping when I press the pedal

Must not be tracking right or not the right belt. Almost sounds like it might be too long. Is everything free moving like idler?

Check the condition of all of the pulleys, pay particular attention to the idler pulley and its mount which is 6-29 in the manual posted above.  look at any belt guides that may contact the belt.  As you proceed perhaps you could post photos.

@Mr guisepp critical , to verify every movement point , idler pulleys  frequently fail  /  hold up  rotation , bet there is a number of movement points that , barely function , make the rust run out of , long dry / rusty , areas , pete

The belt GUARD is the belt GUIDE and  must be ON for the tractor to function. 

 

Is there a build up of rust anywhere? 

 

Is the idler pulley bearing OK? 

 

Agreed with above that pics would be helpful.

There is a small guide at idler fully and a buttom guide on the cover.  It worked perfectly fine before I swapped belt. ( the new belt matches old belt)

I will post photos today.

We've seen several instances of new belts needing a bit of "break in" because the sides are stiff or too grabby. 

 

Please post pics of the new and old belts as well.

Pictures will help. If the belt is installed incorrectly, it will be eaten up. Position of guide on idler is rather critical to belt stoppage. My question for you is if it worked perfectly before swapping, why swap?  It appears to me that your problem is with installation.

It had a critical crack in the old one didn't want it to snap while I was mowing

   If the belt guide on the idler pulley is adjustable, it may be out of position.     Or I have seen the belts incorrectly installed under the stationary belt stop tab.

My belt though the correct size it seems tighter than the one in this video

In the video you don't have the belt guard in place.

Does the belt behave the same with the belt guard installed properly?

I think your belt is the correct length.     Your Raider does not have the stationary belt stop tab on the tractor as shown in my video of my 310-8.

Does your belt guard have a similar tab?   If it does, make sure the belt is above the tab when you install the guard.   Like Eric said, your belt guard must be in place to support the bottom loop of the belt.  This support aids in stopping the belt movement.

You see the silver wear stripe on your guard?

That's the part that keeps the belt in check when disengaged by the clutch.

yes...assuming I installed it properly

Note that Ed’s video shows the guide off the belt while turning the pulley where yours is riding hard and shaving the belt.

so that is is looking down on the top of the guard...are you saying the belt needs to be positioned under that?

yes....so how do I stop that
