snowhound 105 #1 Posted August 1 My 417 has been an head ache since I got it, sometimes it would run OK but never great and not at all most of the time. Today I removed some of the covers so I had better access to the points, removed the points cleaned them, even though they looked good, and reinstalled and set the gap. I pulled the sparkplugs and found they weren't a pair, they were two different plugs so I replaced them with the correct plugs, started it and everything seemed fine. It ran smooth idled fine and when I opened the throttle it was smooth and steady. But, after putting the covers back on it wouldn't start it would fire a few times and die. I tried a little starting fluid and it did start but only after it cranked for awhile and died as soon as the fluid burned. I removed the plugs and put some gas in each plug hole and replaced the plugs and tried strating it but it only fired a couple of times after cranking for about 10 seconds. Any suggestions on what I should do next?
midpack 870 #2 Posted August 1 Have you tried turning it over with the fuel line disconnected from the carb (into a can) to see if the fuel pump is OK? I have a series 1 that I had to put electric on. I don't know if series 2 have that problem too

Whenever a problem comes up the first p[lace to look is whatever was done just before the problem arose. Could be a wire got knocked loose or pinched by the sheet metal. Run a jumper wire from your battery "+" terminal to the ignition coil "+" terminal and see if the problem clears up.

Just a reminder, don't keep this jumper in place if you are not actively cranking or running the tractor. it could bur the points if left in place for a long time. (A few minutes as your working on it is fine)
