Briggs and Stratton 5hp coil

Recommended Posts

I need a coil for my 5hp Briggs, it is a 1972 engine, model # 130902 0017-01 7207216 and the serial number is c751272 if that helps anyone, I am not good with Briggs engines when trying to get a stuck bolt out I heated it up and it caught the coil on fire and burnt the housing and I had a new one all hooked in and i figured out it was the wrong bolt pattern, my fault on that end. - thanks Keaton

Yup - the coil mount is slotted - use a business card - right around .020 thick for most - to set an equal gap between the laminations and the flywheel.....

Note - The original coil for your engine part #298316 is superseded by part #397358. The new part number is for a solid state coil, this coil will not require points. No need to remove the points from your engine, just cut the wire off that goes to your points. The old points can stay where they are and plug the oil hole.:thumbs2:

The solid state coil is a much better unit.

@Achto by oil hole do u mean that black pin that rides on the cam, a cheaper coil that was the part number for the solid state ignition is like 2 bucks more so its just bolt on and set to 15thou with a business card? so basically plug and play?

Yes - just leave the old points where they are. If your remove them you will need to plug the hole for the pin.

Yes - Remove the old coil, cut the wire that goes under the fly wheel to the points, (no need to remove the fly wheel ), set the new coil with a business card, & hook the kill wire to the terminal on the new coil. Job done. :thumbs2:

The solid state coil will be marked as to which way faces the cylinder, this is important for it to work properly.

@Achto so, what would I plug the hole with because I have the flywheel off not because I was putting a new coil on yesterday and it was the wrong one, and when putting the new one on just but a wire off one of the bolts and hook that to a kill switch, there was 2 wires that went to the valuve breather, and use one of those as a ground?

Best off to just leave the points in. they won't do or hurt anything. As long as the flywheel if off, you could  just make sure they are still holding tension on the cam plunger.

There will be a terminal on the solid state coil. Run a wire from that term to a switch, then from the other side of that switch to any chassis ground. Switch closed to ground to kill engine, switch open to ground for run.

@Achto just cut the 2 wires to the points, one was a kill switch and just put in a kill switch and it will all be good and I got a ground tab on the valuve cover, thanks now I wait  for a coil
