Resealing Onan p216

Recommended Posts

I have an Onan P 216 that needs a new intake manifold.  Does anyone know how to get a new or re sealed manifold?  I am nervous to go with a used one that is not resealed because it seems challenging to know if it has leaks. Thanks for your help.

Near the top of this thread is this.  Click on the link 318 Intake.pdf for information.  One thing I do different is to just drill thru with the clearance size and then use stainless steel screws, washers on both sides and locknuts.  Tapping 6-32 holes in thin aluminum isn't for armatures and it will not be as strong as using the locknuts.  Do one hole at a time and temporarily bolt it it using cheap plain nuts to save your locknuts for the final assembly before moving on to the next one.

Also look at the edges of the intake where the heat shields might hit and grind any shields back to provide about 1/8" clearance.

To test an intake for leaks, bolt a plate with a gasket over the carburetor surface, then turn it upside down and fill it with gas, kerosene or diesel fuel.  If you have no way to make a plate you can bolt the carburetor back on with a thick gasket that has no throttle hole.

This thread should make you more comfortable with the repair.  Also you can find videos that can be helpful but as always not everything posted is the best way.

Be sure you have a proper torque wrench and genuine Onan gaskets, some aftermarket gaskets fail quickly.  Torque settings can be found in the Onan Service Manual.

Since you will have the exhaust and intake off it would be a good time to glass bead the exhaust and paint it with Rustoleum high heat paint.  The valve covers often rust so paint them as well.  Also, remove the valve covers and adjust the valves to .005 intake and .013" exhaust, the procedure is in the manual.  If you have any doubt on how to do it, come back here and ask.
