Wheelhorse GT2500 Magnetron Ignition Coil?

Recommended Posts

Can someone help me out? I'm having a little trouble trying to determine if I can put a magnetron ignition coil on my Wheelhorse GT2500.

It has a briggs on it model 252417. It has points and I've had to remove the flywheel a couple times because the point gap resets. It will work for a couple of minutes before the points shrink and no more sparky. I found a parts list (seen below) for the engine that lists the original breaker ignition module (333A), the magnetron ignition (333) and the magnetron kit (897) as possible parts. So to me it seems as easy as putting on the magnetron coil (333) on and having it work without points. I could get the magnetron kit but I'd rather just jump straight to a new coil to limit faulty parts. It just seems a little unclear to me if I can do this and it seems like it has something to do with the flywheel magnet? Any thoughts would be awesome, I am trying to bring this bad boy back from the dead.

Replying to myself in case anyone ever comes across this... it seems like you can do that, but maybe need to repolarize the flywheel.

Alternatively you can just turn the new coil around so it aligns with the original magnetization. Watch this video! Going to get the coil and try it both ways. Will report back.

I put it on the "wrong" way like I said here and could NOT get it to work. I thought the whole time the carb was acting up. As a last ditch effort I thought to rotate the coil the proper way, cylinder side facing the cylinder... That did it.

Seems at least in my case there was no need to rotate the coil from the get go. Just follow the correct instructions.

Sorry I missed the previous post but glad you were able to work it out. Please take a few minutes to let us know a bit more about your Wheel Horse and yourself by doing an introduction.   https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/47-introductions/
