wallfish 17,023 #2 Posted July 14 Key switch, solenoid, starter and wiring. Any background info? Like was there any recent wiring or electrical work done? Was starter, solenoid or key switch replaced? Somehow it's getting constant power to the solenoid's trigger post. Possible the solenoid is bypassed or stuck closed or wired wrong. Faulty or wrong switch,solenoid,starter,wiring etc etc etc. SO many possibilities so any background info would help to possibly narrow it down Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
adsm08 2,103 #3 Posted July 14 If any recent wiring work has been done look around the solenoid. Starters create voltage when spinning. Bendix/solenoid type starters, if the trigger wire and motor wire are hooked to the same side of the solenoid, can create a feedback loop that will keep the starter engaged. Starter spinning creates enough voltage to keep the bendix kicked out, which keeps the starter engaged to the flywheel spinning it, creating voltage, that then keeps the bendix kicked out..... and so on. This is bad for the starter and will eventually burn it up prematurely. Another possibility is that the starter has developed an internal short that is essentially doing the same thing. And of course, like @wallfish said, a sticking starter relay could also cause the issue. I'd get out the voltmeter, get it to act up, and check for voltage between the starter side of the solenoid and the battery negative terminal. That would show a sticking solenoid. If that tests good (no voltage with key off) then I'd look at the starter itself being faulted. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The contacts actually weld themselves to the moving disc. Ever take a well used solenoid apart?? LOTS of burn marks on the disc...... 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
