520 Engine Swap and Rewired, Not Good.

Recommended Posts

Moparfanforever

I took this Magnum engine and key switch out of a 312H that was running and driving, but the frame was cracked really bad.

I swapped the engine and switch into this 520 that had a bad engine and hacked wiring.

20240713_155626.jpg.82b7605aec53030025cb611a2564e6ba.jpgI rewired it using this switch from the 312,it is an Oregon 33 38820240704_141509.jpg.6c9485a58c84e9afa1fed1dc3fe705a0.jpg

It starts and runs, but the problem is, when I turn the key to "start " ,I have to hold the key in start so it will stay running, unless I turn it to off ,then it will stay running in the off position. To shut it off, turn it to "start ".

It sounds like I need to switch two wires, but I checked my wiring a half dozen times and it is right,I think. The switch worked fine in the 312.

S to solenoid

B to battery (30 amp fuse)

R to rectifier (stator)

M to mag

Accessories is not wired yet, that doesn't matter, does it??

If you go back to the battery ignition wiring and switch on the 520 and use a kill relay as shown in the attached thread it should be good to go. The safety switch system on Magnum powered tractors is different than battery powered ignition but the kill relay will correct that.

@953 nut, I may use the 520 ignition switch and relay, but I am going to look into why this setup isn't working when it worked fine on the 312. Although it was factory wiring on the 312.

If I am reading right about the safety switch system, the 520 didn't have any safety switches, barely had any wiring at all. I had to start from scratch.

Here is a thread I did a while back that may help.

@953 nut I used the ignition switch from the 520 and a relay from the 520 and I only get fire at the plug when I turn the key to "OFF" ???

I wired it like in the link above, checked it three times and used two different relays.

UGH!! My brain is hurting from this!!

:confusion-confused:        should have taken a closer look at the 520 wiring first, seems your wiring system already has a kill relay. Looking at the wiring I am thinking the added kill relay will need to be attached to the yellow wirer from the installed relay rather 5than from the ignition switch. @gwest_ca, please take a look and see what you think.

Not sure we are on the same page with the wiring??

The 520 wiring harness was butchered, so I took it ALL out and started from scratch, no safety switches either. I used new wiring, Packard connectors. Only used parts is the 520 key switch and the relay from the 520.

Pretty simple to wire it, not sure what the deal is??

I am just about ready to pull the harness I made out and just use a push button switch for the starter and a toggle switch to kill the Mag.

I Magnum 8 swapped this Raider 10 and used a push button switch and toggle.

The 520 had battery ignition and the ignition circuit from the ignition switch powered the kill replay to supply battery power to the ignition coil. Shut ignition switch off and the relay contacts open.

The terminal above the yellow on the kill relay is the one that would be connected to the magneto ignition.

Yellow not used.

Orange at kill relay needs to be disconnected from ignition circuit and grounded

Thanks Gary, needed a second set of eyes on it.

Guess we don't need to look at the demassification drawings then. As long as you are the only one driving the 520 and are comfortable with simple is better that may be the way to go.           :handgestures-thumbupright:

@953 nut. @gwest_ca

Boy,do I feel like a goof!!!

Put a new push button switch and new toggle in the 520, turned over and started great, but the toggle switch wouldn't turn it off, WTH???

Due to my stupidity, I had the two wires coming out of the engine switched. I was using the purple for the Mag and white for the charging wire, and I am sure you know, they needed to be switched.

I am positive the ignition switch from the 312 and the 520 switch with the relay would have worked correctly if the two engine wires would have been right.

Been chasing this problem for two weeks, UGH!!  :angry-cussingblack:

Thanks for patience and help 🙏
