stevebo-(Moderator) 8,349 #1 Posted July 12 All- I am picking up a 417 A tomorrow. Older seller said he was driving it and tranny locked up. He can roll back a little and when going forward he goes about 5’ and it locks up. It has only 800 hours and looks to me in good cosmetic condition. My question is has anyone had this type of issue with a 417 or any hydro with Eaton 1100? Lastly if tranny is freely broke I have a low hour tranny out of a 520. That too is an 1100. I guess I can swap that in but want to check with all if anyone has this issue before and anything simple to check for?
Bill D 1,932 #2 Posted July 12 Never had this issue. I know others here have. Usually one of the bolts holding the differential together breaks and the pieces jam the transmission. I believe the transmission can be fixed without removing the transmission from the tractor, just pull the small side off.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,090 #3 Posted July 12 Diff is my guess also. A 23" tire has a circumference of 6 feet so at 5 feet it is almost making one revolution. 6
953 nut 55,734 #4 Posted July 12 One more vote for differential bolt. On the Eaton you can remove the small half of the transaxle housing without removing the entire transaxle from the tractor. 2
squonk 41,291 #5 Posted July 12 The small half is the pump. If it's the differential the whole ball of wax has to come out. Swap the 520 trans in and then if you feel like it tear down the other and find the issue. 4
oldlineman 1,482 #6 Posted July 12 Had this happen on a 414-8 several years ago, as stated above sounds like the likely problem .

Some of the bolts through the pump will be removed but not all of them. See page 18 steps 10 to 17 of the manual.
squonk 41,291 #8 Posted July 12 It's easier to remove the whole thing. Sometimes the pump doesn't want to separate from that half. I've done 4 of them and 3 were stuck good.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,349 #9 Posted July 13 Will tranny from 520 work on this? Any modifications needed? I have a low hour 520 trans

stevebo-(Moderator) 8,349 #12 Posted July 13 Picked this up yesterday in Albany area off second owner. Once I figure out the tranny issue it will be a great machine. Got plow and deck with wheel weights with it. Added new battery and fresh fuel and she fired up perfect 1
Bill D 1,932 #13 Posted July 13 Very nice. I'd swap the transmission then figure out what went wrong with the old one.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,349 #14 Posted July 15 So I finally got home from visit with in laws and had my buddy Ken b come over and help me swap out the tranny with the one out of a 520 with only 324 hours. Thanks again Ken! Swap done and she is a real nice unit!! Next step it to clean it up. I wet sanded and buffed hood and it looks real good. Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now either. I'm sure someone here could use it for parts. It likely has good hubs, axles, etc. it may even be repairable.
